Default Fuel line diagram for 1973 CJ5/6

Before I place the body back on my CJ6 build, I'm trying to wrap up anything I can to avoid working under it later. Right now I've run into a question on runing the fuel lines for my 1973. I have two connections on the side of the tank that used to go to a evaporator cansiter and rollover switch/valve located under the driver's side rear fender well. Both of these parts were trashed and I was not planning on putting them back (told it wasn't necessary), but I don't know what I should do with the two gas tank connections. Do I need to install some type of pressure relief valve for vapors off of this?

Also, I've searched the forum for a while and cannot find a basic fuel line diagram on how to run all of the lines - to fuel pump, where to place filter, is there a return line, and the lines above. If anyone has something like this it would be much appreciated. I have the shop manual, but it is vague; they always pay more attention to the years prior and after the intermediates. I can post pics later if that will help once I get home from work tonight.

On my 73 258 I plugged the two fittings and just use the fuel pickup outlet. The fuel line runs across the tank, down along the passenger side rail to a filter near the motor mount then to the pump. I've run it like this for 25 yrs with no issues. Can't say it's the best way, just what works for me.

I have a 73 with a 304. The fuel pump is on the drivers side. My fuel line runs atop the drivers frame rail next to the body mount bushings. The fuel filter is between the pump and carb atop the drivers side valve cover

bcfarms, are the other outlets on you fuel tank simply capped off too and do either or both of you have vented fuel caps then?

I have the stock liquid check valve going to an 80's mustang charcoal canister. Both lines from the tank go to the liquid check.

Also, the sending unit I have has provisions for a fuel return line from the filter. A 73 didn't have a return line, so I capped it with a vacuum cap.

I'd reccomend running the return line in the factory configuration if you can. It helps reduce vapor lock and regulates the pressure to the carb, which helps reduce flooding off road.

I've been trying to get my hands on the factory diagram for the 73 and can't seem to find it; it's not in my manual. Anyone know where to put your hands on one?

I don't understand what you mean by "fuel line diagram." The fuel line goes from the fuel tank to the fuel pump, then to the fuel filter, then to the carburetor. Are you asking about routing of the fuel line?

Oh, you're asking about the vapor recovery lines, not the fuel lines. If you do not want the vapor recovery system, cap the two ports on the fuel tank and install a vented gas tank.

The vapor recovery system for a '73 will be basically the same as for a '74. P. 17 here http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/4A-EmissionControl.pdf The '73 may not have the fuel return circuit, but you can add it if you want (it would be an upgrade to add it).

Poor choice of words on my part; I did mean the vapor recovery lines - thanks. I don't have the parts that were originally installed except the liquid check valve which was trashed and didn't know what I needed, what was standard, and what I could get away with not reinstalling without issues. It seems everyone has differnent opinions, but I like what you stated. Thanks for the link on the '74. It's the first document I've seen with the canister and liquid check valve routing. (I guess I didn't look hard enough)
