    Just bit the bullet and bought a DUI distributor now I have some questions.


    First off, I have what i think to be the cylinder numbers in the pictures below. Can someone confirm?

    Second, How is the distributor supposed to be wired, there are no numbers or information in the directions they gave me. I read something about the short stud or something somewhere at work and now i cant find it. This dam odd fire is so odd. Dist is wire in the 1-6-5-4-3-2-1 Order can someone please tell me how it should be wired up?

    Third, How are you supposed to put the manifold bolt back in??? There is absolutely no clearance on my engine. I have ground the intake to less that 1/16" to the bolt hole and I still have to take the dist cap off, install, and put the cap back on. Does anyone have any picture of their setup/clearance? What are the cons of simply not installing it back?

    Fourth, I don't really want to dish out for live wire but the spark plug wires i have dont fit at all on the new DUI dist, they are too big not to mention the grommet is no where near close to fitting.

    Finally, Everytime we have tried to start it (starting fluid) it back fires though up though the carb. setting it all on fire. Any advice?? Pics appreciated!

    CRT Performance sells real good wire sets for the HEI.

    Here is the orientation for installing the plugs:




    You need a button head bolt for the front of the intake - if you work the grinding and fitting it is fine... Just takes being carefull and mulitple fits to get there a little at a time.

    Like Chuck's HEI, a DUI is always installed with the vacuum advance pointed towards the fan. In this pic you can see the arrangement of wires too.

    Number one is where the advance comes out of the distributor.
    As for the intake, if you plan on staying with the original intake, take it down to 1/8" or 1/16" in your case and use a round head button bolt. If you plan on going to an aftermarket intake as I do, you have other options. Basically I took enough of the bolt head off to work and took the rest off of the front of the intake. This never removed the torque from the intake and therefore no chance of a leak. Granted its ugly, but who's going to see it?

    FYI the timing is really tight on these. Out a few degrees in any direction and it won't start or it will run horribly rough. Mine is a CA motor and times at zero, others are 5-8 btdc. IMO the Livewires are worth the money. Top quality wires with the best heat protection you can get. With headers I wouldn't use anything else.

    One thing of note - Granny's number 1 is at my 3. I thought the DUI was just like the HEI with a bit of tuning already in, but may be wrong. At any point, make sure your number one is on one of the ODD posts and should be on one of the shortest to help with timing issues. If it's on a long post, timing can be a real Bee to get right or keep right as it will impact where the fire position is for the other cyls.

    Does the DUI use the same cap as the HEI? If so then I have to agree that your number one should be on the smaller terminal as shown. This is done to make your initial alignment of reluctor/rotor/cap set-up dead on before start-up.

    Install instructions from DUI for mine was number 1 is the long one at 12 O'Clock. May make it hard to initially time but it runs like a striped *ss ape. It is the longest contact.
