Hey everyone. Information needed as fast as possible...

The exhaust on my 1 owner 71 is still intact from the factory (second and third pic below). However the last (guessing) 4 inches or so rusted off. Jon (owner) of Waldron's Exhaust, wants me to send him this (my original 12/70 pn 988387 muffler and tailpipe) so that they can add this to their list of original exhaust reproductions. As some of you might know, the early exhaust (66-69) is already reproduced by them, but there is nothing for the 70-71's from the muffler back.
What I need to know is this. Does/did the tailpipe after the frame mount hanger turn down slightly or did it stay level. The Service manual (see first pic) shows it looking down from above but does not show a side view. In the second and third picture below you can see where the last little bit of the tailpipe has rusted off. I need to know if anyone still has an original they can take a side pic of, or knows/remembers what it did aft of the frame hanger. I also need to know how far it terminates from the rear cross member.

^^^Great minds think alike. Thank you. I thought the same thing and went through all of mine (I have the original brochures). Unfortunately no pics even come close to showing the rear

Thank you, judging by the bend at the left and the condition of the metal and the tip, it would appear to have been replaced at some point in its life. It also looks to be a larger diameter than 1.75"

If it was mine, I would keep it as high as possible and exit towards the side, not the rear. If there is no documentation to show otherwise then who is to say you are wrong?

Good point. However I am doing a museum restoration. This piece will be reproduced by Waldrons for everyone else to enjoy as a legitimate factory correct replacement.

Personally I think that it stayed horizontal with the slight bend to the drivers side as in the factory parts drawing above. I remember from my old 70 purchased new that it did not stick out past the side of the body, nor did it go out past the rear cross member. I just cannot remember how close to rear it terminated or if it had a slight decline.

Having said that, I am just trying to get this 100% accurate for those that come after me wanting a factory exhaust.

The second last time I had an exhaust system made up at a muffler shop they had a reference book that listed the lengths & bend angles to make up exhaust pipes to factory specs, might be worth checking around to see if you can find one of these.

In the meantime here's a bit better pic from a '72 parts manual

Thank you Howard. The bends and exit are slightly different for the commando's (87)
I will start asking/calling some of the old exhaust places and see if they still have the old specs lying around.

Sorry Howard, I guess I am not following you on providing diagrams from the parts manual. The parts manual diagram you posted above is the same for both R2 and R3 (I jump back and forth between them both daily). They do not show definitely whether or not it stays level or declines after the bend as it is a cutoff view at the hanger portion of the tailpipe. I wish that the Service manual had provided a side view like it did for "early" 66-69 so that any drop would be seen. For whatever reason, Jeep decided a view from above was all that was needed. I hope this response does not come across as snarky (not meant to). I do appreciate your interest in trying to help find the answer as this will benefit everyone in the end.

No worries. I still recommend looking for a pipe bender data book; apparently "Huth" published a set of cards listing the bend data for replicating stock pipes, if you can find an old-timey muffler shop you might get lucky. Bend-Pak also published data as well but it may only be in electronic form to be fed directly into a modern bender.

Great news. The definitive answer is B&C

Not satisfied with my search, I figured I would pull the tailpipe out and give it a thorough inspection at the bend point.

There was enough meat/good pipe left to give me a definitive answer.

Upon closer inspection, I was able to verify that the tailpipe after the hanger only has one die mark which gives it the angle to move slightly away from the frame, however, the pipe was slightly rolled so that the single bend served two purposes. Move it away from the frame and give it a slight downward angle.

So now we know that it both kicked away from the frame towards driver (as shown in top view from Service Manual) and had a slight downward angle as well.

Only question now is, how far away from the rear cross member/brace did it terminate.

So going off of my drawing above.

Nice you could figure it out. I spent about two fruitless hours looking for vintage or low mileage pictures that showed a verifiable original exhaust tip. No luck.

FYI, Waldron's front y-pipe is nothing like the originals. You can see the differences in this thread: Stock V6 Exhaust Install
