Someone Added Coil Springs To My Rear, Why?

Can someone explain to me what's going on here. This is on a 61 cj5 I bought for parts, it used to be a plow jeep. Im assuming the coil on the shock is a redneck repair for a broken shock. But whats the deal with the Coil between the leafs and frame, the brackets look aftermarket rather than homemade. Was this a common vintage mod?

 

Overload setup, seen it before, my IH has the same thing.

 

My 1969 cj5 was a ex spray rig when I got it. Had the coil springs welded on to the axle housing between frame and axle. Tank in rear and gasoline pump in footwell on passenger side.Spray arms welded to front bumper and frame. it was worked hard. Fairly common agriculture use around farm land.

 

Yep, a common method to increase axle loading. And you could by the "spring over" shocks for the same purpose. I still have a Dana 53 from a pickup in the bone pile with those coil brackets welded to the axle housing.

 

There were factory overload coils that mounted on brackets bolted on the side of the chassis, and clamped on top of the axle tube. These were first used on the M38a-1C. When you get a couple more posts, include a photo of what you have. They might be a fairly rare accessory part.

Are the coils worthwhile to transfer to the 59 of rebuilding?

 

I have a 46 and will be turning it into a farm Jeep with the few parts I have a gathered through the years. Would you be willing to sell the brackets? Don’t need the coils just the brackets.

 

I haven't decided yet if I want to keep them or not, but I did see Amazon sells a pretty similar set with coils for $40.

I've also seen the overload springs both coil over shock and independent. The coil spring rate is different than the leaf spring, it'll ride smoother when unloaded with the coils vs the HD leaf springs.

I've seen these kinds of overload springs on trenchers, fire jeeps etc. I suppose that they were a factory add on available for special order.

Nope definitely wasn't a m38a1 setup, appears it was just run of the mill aftermarket overload springs. Amazon still sells a very similar set.
