So I had a nerd moment, to see how evil a jeep could be...

So, travel just a gnat's butt short of 56 inches up the ramp and you'll have some pretty wicked articulation.

    And mmmmm, PI.

Replaced the condensor in the dist.
Had it in the garage the other day to do some maint on the Meyer E-47 and then parked it outside and let it run for a bit.
Was moving one of my sleds in the garage to prep that when the ole F-head just stopped running.
No sputter, no cough, just died.
Condensor pooped its pants, picked up one from NAPA (hecho in Mexico) and runs like a top once again.

I started the hanging pedal part of the project.

Got a 6”x9” piece of 10 ga. plate cut & smoothed. (Using an angle grinder & cut-off wheel is slow compared to a plasma cutter.)

The hanging pedals, if mounted where I want them, will fall within a half-inch of where the existing pedals are when “at rest”. That’s a Good Thing.

The existing fuse panel will have to be relocated, but it’ll get replaced by a modern one, with spade-type fuses.

The steering column could pose a bit of trouble but nothing insurmountable. It may (key word) be less traumatic than I first thought…

I picked up this cheap for the future CJ2 project:

It's a Ford heavy duty 1/2 ton truck Dana 60 with flanged axles and a 5x5.5 bolt pattern.

It's not as good as it sounds for the following reasons:
    • It's a 3.73 and I want to run 5.38s so it's needs a carrier swap
    • It's a powerlok so I can't run a lunch box locker in it, but it needs a carrier swap anyway
    • It's got 30 spline axles, so it's basically a 44 in the places that will break. It needs a carrier (or spider gear swap/lunch box locker swap) and custom axle shafts to go to 35 spline.
    The good things about it:
    • It's a D60!
    • It's 64" wide so I can cut 6 inches from the right side to match the 58" wide D44 front I have. This will give me about the right offset for the D18 transfercase.
    • A Detroit locker and 5.38 gears aren't all that expensive.
    • 35 spline custom axles will work with the outer bearings and there aren't terribly expensive either.
I think in the short term, I'll find a 4.10 and down open carrier to put a 30 spline lunch box locker in and have the right side 30 spline axle cut down. I'll be into that for a little over $1000.

In the long term I can upgrade to a 35 spline Detroit or selectable locker and 35 spline axle shafts. That will be approaching $1800 to $2400 for everything but would be a really nice axle for the money.

Nice! Just an fyi, Dana 60 case break is 4.56-1 down to 7.17-1 which is 4 series and 4.10-1 to 3.54-1 or whatever is 3 series. They are not the same case break as a 44.

I've been futzing with this Sears Deluxe hard top I picked up cheap in kit form. It was pretty wonky in the back but I've got it fairly squared up now with some aluminum angle and pop rivets . IMG_20221126_163504227_HDR.jpg IMG_20221126_163332925_HDR.jpg I started working on the doors but the sun was setting after a beautiful 60° day.

I washed the CO dirt and mud off that was under the PA mud today. Beautiful day for a JEEP ride to the car wash with the Mrs. riding shotgun.

I tore the knuckles apart on the CJ5 and got them cleaned up. Picked up a HF blast cabinet and I have to say it works pretty well.

Mazzio's pizza joint; no idea what brand it is. The guy I rent the building from and who owns the CJ5 has a refrigeration company (think HVAC and appliances) and this was sitting in the boneyard. I figured it'd make a great work table and it does.

Ah, We make a competing unit with a split system. You need some hotel pans for the open area to hold your parts.

Today, I bought, or, more correctly, agreed to buy, an aluminum-block GM 5.3 V8 for my CJ. It was on CL.

It’s not exactly the version I most wanted, but it has the heads with the larger valves and the higher truck intake. It’s complete with the wiring harness and ECM. Since the foot throttle is by wire only, I may have to scrounge one of those.

This is GM’s LH6, from a 2005 Trailblazer. It may need a different oil pan, since these are funky; part of the front differential bolts to the pan, and an axle passes through a sleeve in the pan. Yes, that’s weird…

And, it’s four-plus hours away from me.
