1966 Color Choice

I am struggling with choosing a new color for my '66.

Based on the underside of the tool compartment cover, I believe the original color was Spruce Tip Green Poly. I am a fan of putting vehicles back to their original color, but not sure I am interested in this color. Next best would be a period correct color. From the 1966 PPG color chip selector (see below), the wife likes Olive Mist Poly and also the Platinum Beige (from International). Just curious if anyone has pictures of a vintage Jeep in Olive Mist Poly or any green, taupe, or Khaki colors? Any suggestions for colors sections will be appreciated.

 

I have a 1968 CJ-5 the original color was Spruce Tip Green Poly. I recently repainted it the original color Spruce Tip Green I also like to keep things as origianal as possible. If you would like to see a picture of it PM me and I will send you some photos. I am very pleased with the Spruce Tip Green color.

Spruce Tip Green is an excellent color. Very attractive.

The colors there aren't very accurate, partly due to the camera that shot the color sheet and partly due to the characteristics of your monitor. Anything called "Poly" is metallic.

If you want to abandon the factory colors entirely, go with a pre-packaged color from Kirker or TCP Global. This will reduce your material costs a whole lot. I'd love to see a pic of your Jeep in Spruce Tip Poly. Mine was originally that color, but I went another direction.

 

How much paint does it take to paint a jeep? on average. I'm gonna be spraying mine this summer and have been wondering how much to get.

 

It depends on the color and the quality of paint. And whether you choose single stage or basecoat-clearcoat.

I like President Red . It took me two gallons of base coat/clear coat to paint the entire body inside, outside, and underneath. I probably could have done it for less but there were some parts I had to do twice.

 

Looks great. Very professional.

But it was never that shiny from the factory ... 8)

 

I'll leave it out in the sun for the summer and it will look correct

 

I'll be happy if mine turns out half as nice as that!

I hope you will drive up to Butler Pa. for the Bantam Heritage Jeep Festival in June.

member Alan 28 has the harvest beige and he did a good job too with lots and lots of pictures
Look in the replies eslewhere in the forum for a good example of glacier white from one of the monitors from Canada
Leatherneck has his in the bronze tone in the garage under good light

Now don't get too mad with me. I hand paint O.D Green over O.D. Green on the one in the plane.
The One "on deck" a 66 Cj-5 will be an aluminun Silver color because it is 25 years of Jeep a Silver Anniversary Color.
The third one is od green too

 

Thanks. I do hope to get up to the festival, not sure if I'll drive it or trailer it. Not afraid to drive it except it doesn't have a top and, as you all know, top end floored is like 45 mph. Either way, I will try to get up there this year.

This green is very nice, and to have the original color is nice. I plan to do it with mine, it was a sort of blue/green, some parts are not re-painted so I have the idea of what I want; The President red is nice too.

What is important is to avoid the rust, I paint my hard-top Meyer with Hammerite.
It is important to make a good pre-painting action.
