figured I would ask a few questions here before I go ahead and do what I feel I need to do...

    My configuration is:
    75 CJ6 frame and crossmember
    AMC V8
    77-79 Jeep T18
    Scout D300 (essentially same as a D20)

tried a generic poly trans mount that didn’t want to fit.
I ordered a PN 939995 (labeled as a T14 trans mount) fits great...

current issue is with the crossmember and torque bracket (that I don’t have yet)
the mount does not line up with any of the holes in the crossmember..
I was wondering on the orientation of the crossmember and location of the torque stud.

I have no issue drilling holes and figuring this out that way, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything before I start drilling and fabbing...
Sure this has been done several times before and figured I would ask before I do..

I had to custom fab a piece for the trans mount and elongated the hole for the torque donut to get it to work........I had several cross members so wasn't afraid to play a bit.........always wanted to custom fab a beefier x member and skid but never got around to it before I sold the 6

doing some research I found this picture...
is this how the trans mount and torque stud should be????
if this offset situation is correct I can understand why I’m stuck...

I had to re drill my crossmember to work with my t18. After that I was able to center up the mount.
I had it offset like that for about a day but it seemed to be really sloppy and moved around a bit.

That shows the three-speed mount. If you can make it work with the T-18, great.

This is the factory mount for a T-18:

It has the snubber on the passenger side. The insulator is a 1370910.

There is no 18.220-1. Maybe you mean 18.215-1? Just make something from angle iron or such.

I did the same T18 install on my 75 CJ5. I originaly used the stock crossmember and mounts. I recall having to drill the tranny mount to bolt it up to the T18 tranny. The OEM crossmemebr got hammered on rocks etc and was always catchin on something or another. I built a new crosssmemebr out of 3/8" steel. I am still not satisfied and have purchased a universal cross memmber kit from Daves Offroad. Haven't installed it yet but will soon..

Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to look at this again...

I'm getting frustrated that in theory it's a stock setup and nothing is just fitting...

ends up I think the adapter plate on the trans/tcase might be my issue...

the mounting bolt spread is wider than any of the 5 different mounts I purchased to test...
    drilling and tapping today...

I think you are correct about the trans/tcase adapter. The 6 cyl t-14 (SIX-W3ST) and 8 cyl t-15 (V8-WMT) (I don't think the t-18 was available with the V8 from the factory in the CJ-5 until 79 ) mounted via a mounting boss cast into the transmission housing (hence they use the same mount scheme at the same location on the cross member). The 6 cyl t-18 (SIX-W4ST) mounted via holes drilled in the bottom of the trans/tcase adapter plate. The additional length created by the t-18 transmission to bell housing adapter plate plus the transmission to transfer case adapter plate (all stock parts) required that the cross member be located a bit further back on the frame (holes already there from factory) and the part 18.215.1 was also used to moved the mounting point back (and down) a bit more. I had all the stock parts to move from a t-14 to t-18 on my 74 including the torque snubber mounted on the passenger side (once I found it in my parts box).

USMC 0369 (Nick)has a classifieds ad in intermediate section.
Not listed is a factory 1974 crossmember for a 258/T18 with the cast iron bracket on it.
I saw it today still mounted on the frame.
Contact him if you need the parts.

He also had a gas tank/filler spout/filler neck/vent hose combo still on the body.

I am almost finished with my crossmember install. It is similar to cj6/442's , but mine is solid at the tranny and has rubber at each end. This is supposed to be an improvement over stock as it gives the drivetrain 4 mounting points instead of three that are in a triangle configuration. The torque is absorbed at each end of the mounts.. I do plan on adding a piece of plate under the Xfer case as cj6/442 did on his for a bit of rock protection.. If there is interest I'll post a few pix.
