..I recently purchased a "1976 CJ5 I6 232 single barrel 3-speed manual". Actually that is what the title says. There was very little body left and no ID plate I could find (but an amazingly clean frame). I am finding lots of surprises (but that is okay, I wanted a winter project and it only cost me $750 plus $50 towed to my house). I took the single barrel carb off this evening and see that it is a Holley rather than a Carter. I can't find any reference to a Holley being native to a 76 CJ5 I6 232, so I am assuming it was a replacement. The are the following stampings on it -

    6R-5586
Above the Holley logo in line with the linkage and

    80659
    156 7

on the adjacent side of the float bowl, which I also cannot find any reference to.

So I am doubting everything related to the VIN, except that the wheelbase does match a CJ5 and it is a 3 speed. Does anyone know what engine stampings I scan look for that will tell me what displacement it is?

    Thank you in advance.

The Holley is probably a replacement for the stock Carter, it should have an Rxxxx number on it somewhere that'll identify it.

The engine build date code is here, along with the TSM for 1976. JeepĀ® 1976 TSM online Section 1-A.

The sequential serial number is stamped into the top of the frame, near the right front shock absorber mount. This won't tell you about the build date, since Jeep would restart the SN every year in this era. However, you can compare with the trailing digits on your paper and get an idea if it's a valid title. The axles have a build date code but I'm not familiar with decoding them. Look on the net and there may be info. if it's a '76, the front will be a Dana 30 and the rear an AMC 20 Corporate axle.

Post better pictures and we can make additional comments.

Yes, I recall Holley had a line of replacment carburetors, which may have included a replacement for the YF.

Thank you both for the information. I found the machined plate between #2 / 3 but it has been repainted so many time I have not made the numbers out yet. What I have found that really stands out is a series of raised characters, with " 5.24.76 " really clear, on the intake manifold, There is also another series above not as legible " N 32252"(maybe)3"" (maybe)2. I have not read any information about intake manifold numbers. (and I can't find any numbering on the frame)

I suggest you try harder to read the stamped number on the engine and frame. The casting numbers are suggestive of a date in 1976, but I don't know whether you can rely on them. May 24th is late in the 1976 production (which ended mid-summer), and engines were built ahead of their use in vehicles.

Had to get my highest magnification reading glasses (+2.5) and brightest shop light! But I got it - 906E02 - 1976 232 built June 2nd. Thank you for your help.

So now I have to figure out the carb model, as I am pretty sure it should be rebuilt. To colojeepguy - here are two shots of the numbers stamped into the carb - none start with an "R""?
