I’ve posted this before about the YF. The guy below bought all the Carter stuff when they closed up. He can make whatever rod you want. I had him make me a plus 1 and plus 2 lean for when I move to Colorado. Not that expensive. Call him. THE CARBURETOR SHOP / Company History

Black after idling either means nothing (on choke) or idle mixture too rich. That's separate from the main jets.

Run it up the highway a few miles and back. Then pull the plugs and look at them, without extended idling.

The trick is to work CLEAN.... The float can be tricky, but if it overflows it's too low, if you can't get the idle mixture set or it runs out of oomph at WOT, it's too high.

Buildflycrash, I would bet dollars to donuts that if you showed up a day or two early, had the recommended parts in hand AND proper adult beverages, someone would help you with the change of jets. But then, what do I know?

I’ll be a couple weeks early. And definitely will be seeing some folks. Just hoping to have this done and learn something new along the way.

I'm not sure if I'm going to make the trip now :( but if you make it to Colorado Springs I'd be happy to throw some jets in your carb.

    What?

I’ll be in the area for sure to pick up some stuff from Warlock. Not sure if it’s going to be before or on the way home.

I’m just going to open her up and do the swap. If I screw something up I’m sure y’all will help me fix it. To ECJ5

I can barely drive my clutches right now for the same reason - the oar rig trip had hellacious upriver winds and pulling against them on the last morning, I tweaked my back. Loading everything from the rig to the truck finished it off and then a 4+ hour drive home. I've been 'managing' a bad back for the last 5 years - think it was injured in a skiing accident, but it was truly finished off when changing a flat tire on my truck and I lifted the tire into the tuck bed - never been the same. Hate to say it, but stretching and my wife's core focused exercise classes like Yoga, pilates, eccentrics really do help - but as soon as I stop and get lazy doing them (such as the last couple months), I do something that brings it back. The good news, usually it takes a week or so for things to come around that I can move without constant pain, and within a month I am usually pretty much back to normal. In my case, only muscular issues, no slipped or herniated disks - that gets a bit more serious. Hope you are feeling better soon...Yesterday was a rough one here, but today I can at least sit at the computer for a bit without too much pain.
FWIW - I run 47 jets in the R2g in my 225. Even here in Denver, the officially listed 49s were too fuel rich for most all the driving it does is above 8,000' . If I ever get the exhaust flowing a bit better, I think I can drop down to 48s as a good compromise between Denver and high passes, but the 47s work well up high and while the trails here are quite easy (say compared to the Rubicon), there is an added pucker factor on steep, shelf road switchbacks when the carb starts getting grumpy. A few years ago when Mike passed through on his epic western road trip in the cj5 from Indiana, we changed the jets in a roadside parking spot in about 10 min and then had beer and pizza. My biggest concern was dropping one of the little linkage clips and not being able to find it on the street. Sure some of us would be happy to help you out with it if needed.

I really don't want to remember the number of times I've changed jets and float level on the trail... Did I mention that I really love my EFI

And yes - it will take me 15 mins to teach you how to change jets here at the shop out back.

I just rebuilt my YF with parts from Mike's Carburetors. Haven't done that in a loooong time. He has some great videos and he does a 4 part video on a YFA which is essentially the same, small differences. (assuming you have a YF or YFA)

If you are mechanically inclined enough to keep an old Jeep running you can rebuild the carb.

I am following this thread with intention of having my Jeep ready for the Colorado trip. I drove the Jeep last weekend. I got the engine up to temp (went on a 1/2 hour drive), drove relatively hard then coasted into driveway and shut it down. I pulled the forward plug from each bank. Carb was cleaned recently (had it done). Here are pictures of the plugs.

What are these plugs saying? Too lean? Carb is jetted how it was when i purchased it. P.O. used in California/ Nevada Sierra's from what i was told. I live in So. Cal. driving around L.A. basin.

I'm no expert but those look perfect to me.

I received the jets this week from Mikes Carbs. Hope to switch in the 49 jets in the next couple days.

Spark plugs look good. Are they new ? Sometimes hard to tell with new spark plugs.

Only way to know the jetting is to remove one and read the number.
