How Much Clearance Do Disc Brakes Need?

    I did search in the forum for an answer, but can't figure out a way to search that isn't too broad of a search.

    I want to know if there is a certain amount of clearance required/recommended between disc brake calipers and the inside of the wheel. There are lots of posts talking about grinding parts to make clearance, but how much? I have a stock disc brake Dana 30 from a 79 CJ5 in my 75 CJ6and was just playing with some mystery "jeep" rims I bought today. They are marked 15x6 and they "clear" the disc brakes on the front end, but there isn't a lot of room between the brakes and the wheel. Is any space enough space?

    In my experience, yes. I’ve had some that were really close, and never had an issue. As long as the clearance is on the outer (e.g., the top), and not the side of the caliper. If the clearance issue is on the side of the caliper, make sure you have new (thick) pads installed when clearancing. You want the caliper to be in its outermost point.

    All the brake parts are new, so I guess that is good. It was getting dark when I test fitted it. I will try to get eyes on it in the daylight sometime tomorrow. At least I can sleep better now knowing that It is leaning toward being good.

    Plasticine clay works well for measuring clearances. Put the clay in the joint and put it together, take it apart and check the thickness. Used by engine builders to check valve-piston clearances routinely.
