    Hi everybody!
Trying to button up my Dana 18 to finish my clutch replacement turn T14 rebuild.
All 4 corners of the D18 pan gasket blew out. Torqued to 13 ft/lbs.
The pan was very slightly warped and I was careful to press all 10 dimples out (whoever was in there last torqued the bolts to about 3 zillion inch pounds).
Is this common? Will it hold oil if it was put together with enough RTV?
Did I use too much RTV?
D20 torque spec says 12-15, couldn’t find it for the 18, did I hit it too hard?

My instincts say open it back up and clean it off and start over.
I don’t have another gasket but I can use RTV gasket maker if I need to re do it.

    Thanks again for your thoughts!

    Andy

I never use RTV. At all. Ever. Because this.

Get a gasket and use Permatex #2 or equivalent.

    @PeteL
Would you please educate me on Permatex #2?

    Is this it?
It has been many years since I’ve done any serious automotive work, so my education is continuing!
Now let’s hope Autozone can get me a gasket...

    Not what you illustrate.
#2 is a traditional old fashioned gooey black sealer, non-hardening but very sticky. Used to be the standard.

Permatex also makes a red spray on gasket tack, which I use when only a light amount is needed.

    Okay!
Found it! I’ve got half a tube left from the FJ60 I had many moons ago.
If I could just find a stand alone gasket, I’ll be in business!

I’ve still got to mate the TC to the Transmission, so I don’t want to screw that one up.

    Thank you guys!

You might consider this Permatex product also. I had 2 people tell me about the product. One was a neighbor with a perpetual transmission/transfer case leak that he was unable to stop until using this. Two years later and no issues. The other was an old school flaps attendant. I used it and no more leaks.
