I am looking in to re-engineering my rear axle. The first step along the path is to get the dimensions ( inside dia and outside dia.) of a Dana 44 axle bearing. If anyone can help, that would be fantastic. I can get bearing part numbers but cannot find dimensions. If someone has a spare bearing lying around and could measure it, that would be great. If all else fails I'll try Summitracing.

In previous posts I have talked about lousing wheel bearings every 3000 miles in my M20 axle and have replaced three axles with every bearing loss. ( Moser one piece axles and bearings ) The M20 is on the bench and a 1975 CJ Dana 44 is in the Jeep. BUT it has 3.73 gears, the front has 3.54. So I need to regear. The M20 has a True-Trac limited slip that does not fit the Dana, which means another $600. Also the Dana 44 axle does not align with the D20 Xfer case output, offset isn't too much but noticeable and annoying to me.

So I am researching dimensions to answer the following questions,
The Moser axle bearing uses a spacer that must be ground to fit, so the bearing sets with in tolerances.
If the D44 bearing can be made to fit within those tolerances, .....
Will the D44 bearing press on to the M20 axle. if it does, ....
being a thicker bearing will the retaining ring press on and not touch the axle tube seal. This I can calculate from dimensions

I have other mods to make but if the above doesn't work, then why go further

So, :coffee:. anybody got a spare bearing out there. :waiting:

It's amazing how fast ideas die when you get all the facts. ...... time to think of something else.

The difference between the axle ratios is so small I wouldn't worry about it off road.

I disagree with this a bit....
Variations of a couple of points is acceptable(4.09-4.10, 3.50-3.54, etc..), however, 3.54 to 3.73 is going to bind up unless you are running loose mud or sand.
