I'm installing new oil lines on my f134. The fitting on the timing chain is boogered up. It has a hex head on it but it's brass so it's rounding when I try to loosen it and doesn't budge at all.

Is it a straightforward thread? I'm about to try vice grips but don't want to damage the TC cov 20211011_124129_compress53.jpg 20211011_124102_compress4.jpg er threads.

    NO!

That is a factory fitting, and is brazed in.

Too late Pete, looks like that fitting is FUBAR and no longer even round inside. A new fitting will need to be brazed on to the cover, or look for another cover with a good fitting.

It is a gear cam cover, but I got one in the shed that had the same, but was a chain drive cam engine when I took it off. I have the right cover for that older engine, so I happen to have an extra gear drive cover that may have a better fitting if Don needs it.

So it's brazed for sure? Any idea why it has a hex head?

Yes it's brazed, or maybe soldered, either way definitely not screwed in. Hex head? Probably just a stock catalog fitting, I'm guessing a reverse flare (3/16"?) to 1/8" NPT, chaeper than machinng up a special fitting. Yhe output fitting on the gas tank is the same type of deal- hex but soldered to the tank.

That's my memory. Does it looks gold like brass, or silver like solder?

Because it is still a fitting and needs a wrench on it.

I haven't cleaned it so I don't know. Looks like I need to replace the cover.

These and the one on the fuel tank have a hex head so you can hold them in place while you tighten in the fitting for the line without stressing the soldered joint.

I responded to the PM, will check what I have in the shed, if good will send that one, or go take a look at the half dozen engines I have out in the barn.

Crank pulleys are funny. Sometimes they come off easy, sometime not.

I have not had good luck getting one that is really stuck off without bending it, so you might have to buy a new one.

One thing that helps is after you remove the nut use a piece of wood maybe a 2x2 and rap that with a hammer on the face of the pulley in a Y pattern to try to loosen it up before you put a puller on it. May help to squirt some penetrating oil in the bore and around the key way.

Of course you will want to put a new seal in the timing cover when putting it back together.

id just solder a new one on top of the old one but i suppose its a good time to check or change the timing set if youve never had it apart

He has a good cover in route. I would not toss that one with the messed up fitting, I would solder or braze a new fitting into it but I would have to have it off the Jeep and thoroughly cleaned up to do it.
