I managed to get the hub off on my lunch break , but stopped there as I ran out of time. Man that thing almost took off my hand when it popped off the axle! In fact, if I lie a machinists square along the flat face of the hub, it's not flat. I wonder if I did bend it, all I had available was a three-jaw puller.

Can someone refresh my memory - do I need to fully remove the brakes and backing plates to get the axle shaft out? I feel like the answer is yes, in order to get the puller to yank out the axle.

Yes you’re right, the tapered axle will come out with the bearing still on it.

I’ll need a slide hammer to get the axle and bearings out right? It’s been three years since I did this last.

Generally yes. I've taken a wood block and pounded on the end of the opposite shaft with some success in the past. The opposite shaft will push on the thrust block which pushes on the shaft you want to get out. Sometimes it's enough to pop the race out of the housing.

Here's some pics of where I got to - now I can't figure out how to attach the slide puller to the hub/studs to yank the axle off...might need to fabricate something else.

If your slide hammer has a small two or three arm puller option, you can screw the nut on an use the puller on the nut.

I've also had luck putting the hub on without the keyway and then putting the nut on a few threads and using the hub itself as a slide hammer against the nut.

I texted my mechanic mentor Chief (who I borrowed the puller and slide hammer from) and he reminded me that I have three perfectly good 1/2-20 to 1/2-13 extension adapters over on my spare tire carrier...those went on like a charm and got it right out with a few slings of the slide.

Before I did though I put a dial indicator on it to make absolutely sure this was totally necessary and the runout was crazy - like 50 thousandths! So this thing is way bent. Screenshot from the video:

Looking forward to getting @timsresort old axle in the mail next week to put it all back together.

Do you think I will be able to re-use the bearings? The race looks fine. I know I will probably need to have an extra shim pack on hand to get the 0.006" run-out that is prescribed.

I might recheck runout on the taper behind the threads rather than on the threads.

Grant, I'm just back from the Rubicon, and I found this for you. It's the fence at the mechanic's shack. I couldn't get it apart, so I'm sending the whole thing and you can have some spares!

Haha classic Tim! I’ll have a little guy clean one off with his toothbrush…

Hey what do you guys think – should I be able to pop the wheel bearing off the old axle and press it onto the new one, or do I need to get a new bearing? It’s got about 17 miles on it.

I think you should get a new one, Grant. When pulling off the 17 mile only one , you'll likely damage it. I Dunno..... but if it were me , I'd have a fresh one ready to go. They're fairly inexpensive , I recall ?

Yeah they are not too expensive. Plus I can send the old one to Tim for his swingset!

How about the studs - are those typically reusable or should I start over there too since I have a new hub.

Edit: Now of course I can't find the D44 shims either so have to hope Tim's axle and my old one are close in length.

For what it's worth, I pushed an old crusty bearing off the axle I sent you, it came off with what I would call a light press. You might be able to re-use yours.

    I can only try!

Tim, got the axle, looks to be in great shape, and I dry fit it and put the dial indicator on it, and its perfectly straight. Thanks!

That’s what it is all about.. on your booster seat just use a large beach towel laid on the seat in a single layer it’s easier to get the seat belts properly tightened.I put a d ring bolted to the floor just behind the passenger seat for the tether to hook to.
