If that is the one you got from me the nose cap of those older Warns are just sitting on roll pins instead of the screws used in later versions.

Others may know more than I do, but I don't know whether the end play here matters, but I would assume it doe not since there is nothing to tighten it up until the unit is installed.

If you find there is a problem with that unit I will buy it back for what you paid for it.

 

I don't think that gap matters in forward motion.

My pivot bracket bolts to the adapter which will be a lot different from your SM465.

 

that 'gap' is not adjustable, but I notice in the photo the radial needle bearing is outboard of both the thin and thick bearing races. It belongs between them. Manufacturer diagrams show the thinner race towards the cap, but I install the thicker race towards the cap so it doesn't slip down during assembly.

 

I don't think so. Sort of looks that way in the top picture but I think that is an optical illusion. The second picture shows the thick thrust washer against the bowl, the bearing, and the thin thrust washer against the cone with the bearing between them as it should be. You can see the space and even the ends of the roller bearings.

Duffer's very nicely made shifter is for a rear shift unit. This overdrive is an early Warn with the front shift. I think some spacers about 3/8" to 1/2" under the bracket will provide the clearance needed.

James, look in Roy's (Fireball) 71 build thread for how he mounted the shifter to the SM465. That too is rear shift if I recall correctly but you should still be able to make something similar.

 

It would seem like the best solution for that would be a bracket welded or bolted to the adapter plate with the shifter about parallel to the transfercase shifters. Or come off the trans cover rearward.

 

I intentionally put mine inline with the Trasmission shifter for a litle symmetry. Front shift would have been easier to deal with but, of course, doesn't work with the large hole D18.

Bending the levers is easy. I ended up having to bend all four of them to get things to clear each other. The transmission one required heat from a torch but all the others cold bent easily by putting a piece of pipe over them.
