New input shaft installed in the trans, ready to go in the CJ!
    20220904_112924.jpg

And some quality gaskets from Crown
Note the crappy bolt hole alignment.

The way you get these now days makes me yearn to be able to get a roll of gasket material and use a ball peen hammer and make my own. Its tough to get the rolls of material now days - at least when I look for it.

    Good news/bad news....
The trans is in the Jeep!

Bad news, I just found this laying on my work bench :banghead:
    20220904_152346.jpg
It's an oil slinger that goesbehind the front bearing.
    Is it critical?
What happens if I run without it?

The material thickness of the oil slinger can mess with the position of the input gear being closer to the case and the little needle bearings between the input and mainshaft allowing a little extra clearance. I'ld take the cover off and check those areas but personally i'ld try running it. You'll know it's not happy.

Well, I've decided to pull it back out & install that missing piece.
I want this thing to be right & to last, I'm getting to the age where this sort of work hurts me and I don't want to have to do it twice.
Right now there's just the 4 bolts holding the trans in so it wont be a huge job to take it back out.

That is an oil slinger it keeps the front input bearing lubed . Very important .

It slings oil out of the gap between it and the bearing.

If your input bearing is sealed you can run it without if it’s an open cage you need it or else you will have a dry bearing.

The T-18 used two different bearing thicknesses. The thinner one used the slinger and the thicker bearing did not. The input shaft/gears are different in the bearing area to accommodate either one or the other. You have no choice but to run what the factory ran or things simply won’t work.

Not much time to work on this, life is getting in the way. But I did pull the trans, install the oil slinger I forgot, and reinstall it. Next step is to build my transfer case....

So I have 2 transfer cases (actually I have 4 or 5 but that's another story)
This one is the original large hole single stick D18 that came in my Jeep behind the T14.
    20220915_185217.jpg

And this one is the small hole D18 that's been behind the T90 in my Jeep for the last 20 or so years. It's a twin stick with a roller bearing intermediate gear.
    20220915_185421.jpg

The plan is to use the large hole case and install the twin shifters, roller bearing gear, and Warn od from the small hole case.
My question is, should I use all the guts out of the small case or use what's already in the large case?

If you use all the guts from the small case, you know all the tooth counts will be compatible for the overdrive, roller bearing intermediate gear and the like.

X2 on using all guts of the small case. They should all be lapped in and get along like a bus load of nuns.

as to adding twin stick to a T 18 . your going to need to clearance . the inside of twin stick housing and possibly the side of transmission
I talked with nick about this . just to get the bolts lined up with case
after I got all the bolts in . then I took it apart and changed shafts to twin stick

Once I get both cases disassembled, I'll mock it up to the trans with just the case and front housing.

Factory T98-A had about 1/4” ground off the front bearing cap casting to fit the twin sticks.

You are going to have to do something like this...

    (Roy's is much neater)

I built a new crossmember and I'm very happy with it.
Started by bolting some flat plate to the transmission mount, the TC mount and the frame rails. Connected it all with more flat stock and then added small square tubing to the front and back edge to tie it all together.
