I own a 70 v6 cj5 that I purchased new April 1970, delivered May 1,1970. When ordered I tried to buy a 4spd but the dealer said you could not purchase v6 with s 4spd. Jeep has a dana 18 transfer case. Jeep has a warn overdrive with 4.88 axles, which work well. Was dealer incorrect about not being able to order 4spd at that time. This was also the time that AMC was buying Kaiser jeep. I have always thought about this?

I suspect your dealer was incorrect. There are T98/T-18 equipped V6 CJ-5's built by the factory.

The dealer just didn't have one with a four speed, and didn't want to loose a sale, so he lied. Hard to imagine a car salesman telling a lie, but it happens.

Not for sure about 1970, but 1971 had the 4 speed in the official option list. It was on the expensive side.

It was a rare option, but they did make a few with the V6 & a T18.
There's LOTS of info on this site about converting from 3 speed to 4 speed, including mine that i'm in the process of doing right now!

No T98 was ever factory mated to the Dauntless.
The Jeep T98-A was mated to the F134 for CJ 5/6.
No 4 speed options for Dauntless prior to 1970.
Only the narrow ratio T18 in 1970-1971.
Best I can tell is that it’s possible the Jeep NR T18 was not yet an option in early model year 1970.

The W1195 published December 1967 has absolutely no mention of the Dauntless T18.
The next parts list was the w1195 R1 of December 1970 and it definitely does mention the Dauntless 4 speed.
    Part number 994753.
That said December of 1970 was the 1971 model year.
