Sfaulken, I think we're making the same point. My mind was going to the smog pumps and air injectors of the 70's, but I'll agree that things didn't really get dialed until the 90's like you said. My point is that gasoline emissions equipment is pretty dialed in.

Modern diesel emissions seems to be leaps and bounds better than it was 15 years ago too. My experience comes from the 2005 f250 6.0 that I loved/hated, and the 2010 bmw x5 diesel that I still own. The emissions equipment is problematic in both of those vehicles, but you hear a lot fewer problems with def, dfp's and egr's than you used to. Yes they're still expensive to replace, but that's not the point of this discussion.

Well let's not talk about cam phasers, the life expectancy of gas turbos, plastic pressurized intake tubes, plastic radiator hoses, or the 12 fuel injectors.

But it looks good and goes fast.

But you guys have skirted some key points.
40k miles as a rental = cheap horsepower with all the "new stuff".
We will be able to trade this in later as say a 5yr old two owner vehicle with typical mileage and no rust.

The powertrain is so common parts aren't an issue.
I absolutely hate cars like the v8 sho with one off engines.

Just for reference our loan for this will be paid off in the next 3 years so we are not upside down by any means.

Still going strong at 51k miles.
    of our milage:
over 2000 was a road trip with just the car loaded and got a steady 23mpg.
Another 2000 was towing the camper to Colorado with a steady 10.5mpg
About another 1000 towing the camper on shorter trips
928miles towing the Jeep at 15mpg.
Around town I believe we are at 16mpg.

Everything is the same mpg as the Flex when not towing. I think the camper is about 8mpg with the Flex mostly due to the lower profile of the car exposing more of the front of the trailer. The Flex hasn't needed to pull the Jeep, I have no reason to try and I'm confident it will not be fun.

I feel like we are definitely using this vehicle and it is working well for us. Towing is pleasant, pulls the camper with ease. The HD tow package would just be icing on the cake.

We've had this for a year now and the only things I would change are to have remote start, and max towing package for built in trailer brake controller with low range in the transfercase.

I'm still impressed with it every time I hop in and gooooooooo!!! :D

We went camping at the nearby state park last weekend (20mi) and then went to the Moore expo in Springfield MO this weekend (120mi).

AC is leaking on the truck. $75 per 12oz and holds 36oz:cry:

I wonder if ac leaking is a ford thing as of late. We have two 2017’s and a 2019 f450’s with 6.7’s at work. All three need dealer ac refills annually every year.

At $795 for a dealership to replace Schrader valves and charge 1234yf with dye and oil. I better not need to go back in the next 2 years or it's getting traded for a suburban with r134.

The $75 can leaked out in 3 weeks And they didn't find a leak. I'll be looking for dye traces at the next gas up.

No, it's not a "Ford Thing", you've got a problem, that is being poorly diagnosed, and the dealership would rather just charge you once a year to top the system off, rather than fix the problem. I had an entire damn *fleet* of F450s and F550's as new as 2021MY when I quit that job (roughly 150 trucks) and we didn't have that issue.

Now whether the fix is more expensive than spending $75 a year over the life of the truck, I have no idea.

You're gonna need new wiper arms too (recall)
As far as the AC goes, we haven't seen a lot of AC repairs at my work (Ford dealership).

A three year old car should be having this problem. Ford needs to own up to this.

The dealership that did the work last is gonna take a look Thursday. It has dye in the system so I'm borrowing a shop and two post lift Saturday. Gotta find a black light tonight or tomorrow.

I haven't updated this for a while. I took the Expedition back this summer for the ac to be looked at again, had to pay for the refrigerant and line that the other ford dealership jacked up when doing a cam phaser recall.

I had the vehicle two weeks ago (wife normally drives it) and the same transmission error came up so I scheduled an appointment for warranty work (with 88 miles remaining on 5yr 60k powertrain) then the wife said that error comes on every day... :banghead:
So it was dropped off with 44miles to go on a sunday for a Wednesday afternoon appointment. I get a call noon Wednesday saying it'll be pushed back a week, no real explanation so I suggested they get to it sooner than a week so we at least know what is going on (electrical or mechanical). So I leave em alone a few days (it's 45 miles from home) and call monday, they just got a tech on it. 5 min later they call back and it's parking paw in the transmission needs replaced so they are working on a warranty claim. I call Wednesday and transmission warranty repair was approved they have everything they need except for a screen but it's going to be a while because the mechanic (who is working on 5 other vehicles and training people) is on light duty...

I guess he got hurt when starting work on my vehicle or just before.

And the lower grill louvers are making noise, those are not covered under warranty. $900 to fix... they shall continue to make noise, I'll also need to pull the door apart because it isn't actuating the lock.

Transmission is repaired, cross Transmission fluid change off the to-do list.
I'm thinking of getting some skid plates to help protect the cats and Transmission.

Random question on these electronic ford transfercases...
Ours is single speed transfercase with 10 speed Transmission is it possible to easily change to a two speed transfercase?

I don't know for sure, but it's possible you could transplant a 2-speed case out of an F150 into it, Ford, for whatever reason, was pretty good about using the same spline count and mounting flange starting in about 1983 or so, up until the newest models, as far as I know. You might have to get the extension housing out of the F150 as well.

Yeah the 2 speed is installed in the heavy duty tow package and on the fx4 / timberline package but the max (long wheelbase) never got the offroad option. My inlaws 2013 Expedition EL has the low range transfercase but ours is all computer controlled and weird. Maybe it's just a matter of swapping cases and picking an option in the computer otherwise i'ld have to trade to a Expedition max with HD towing then add skid plates but this one clicks with my wife for what she wants.
I just need to remember it's her 370hp 470tq jeep towing minivan...
