Another Parking Brake Discussion..

I absolutely love my front line lock just as much as the rear cable actuated system.

 

I agree. And I think where this goes sideways is the differentiation between the terms "parking" and "emergency". Chris was asking about parking brakes. An emergency brake must be a redundant system, which a parking brake is not.

 

I agree.
A cable system works for both emergency and parking. It is really the best of both worlds, but needs to be well maintained in order to be reliable and life saving in event of emergency.
A line lock is a great addition to the front for additional holding power in many situations.

 

I completely agree and was just noting it's one of the few solutions that you can add some redundancy to. However it's not complete. Dead battery? No parking brake.

 

To all of these replies about safety and reliability.... Right now I have the transferase brake. Its NOT an emergency brake, its barely a parking brake, so any of these solutions are better. I would like to have an emergency brake, but I figured that semantics would get me flayed, so I stated parking brake.

Honestly, everything is pretty much an emergency driving this jeep above 45mph..

I like a lot of these ideas, but I think I have 2 great choices. 11"drums that are factory nd we know work well enough and the Wilwood MC4 calipers. They are both mechanical and would pass an inspection... The rest of jeep. ?

These 2 choices need the least fabrication and are closer to equal in price... Ridiculous.

The cheapest are line locks and not a bad idea for my purposes.

can you do a disk in place of the drum on the 18 and a spring style single caliper?
some simple engineering/welding required though to bolt the thing on

 

Yup and it’s been done. That requires a good bit of engineering and it also creates a situation that doesn’t fix the d18 drum hanging down to get smashed on a rock .

It's a thing ...

 

I figure you could drill and tap for a small motorcycle rotor and rotate the caliper 90* or close to it. it would solve the caliper from hanging down.
extend the skid plate past it for extra protection?

I read the rest of it. seems like a pretty complicated actuating action. my TJ has a 9" with exploder disk brakes so internal drum e brake. with LJ cables.

 

It can totally be done and I had the parts to do it. After thinking about it and mocking it up, it was still not the solution I was looking for.

Most everything is good until it fails. I'm sure we've all seen failures of all kinds of systems. I once had the park/emergency brake on an 81 chevy pickup pop loose on me and nearly ran over my foot, while I was scraping frost from the windshield. Luckily it hit the tree behind it before it hit me. Just a basic foot operated pedal. Truck was only a couple years old.
I like the idea of using foot operated, and hyd lock of some kind in combination.

 

I think this is the way to go, but as I said before, quite the escalation.

 

I bought 4 of the cheapest line locks for quadruple redundancy and to make sure I instantly didn't die!!

kidding, just bought the RH and LH Wildwood MC4 caliper 120-15484-BK and 120-15485-BK

I also bought the universal cable kit. So far I am into this a bit over 400 bucks and that doesn't include fabbing the mounts or buying a lever. Cheapest prices I could find. At some point soon it might. have been more cost effective to just get a complete axle.

 

Almost every time I try to do something cheap I end up doing it twice and it costs me more than whatever the more expensive option would have cost on the first go around.
I've never regretted spending the money up front to do a job right!

 

This was always the option I wanted to do anyway. It keeps the big GM disks that are the same on the same D30 hubs all the way around and this will give me a mechanical brake at both rear wheels without drums. While I know drums will work, I still had an outlay of money similar to this solution and these are cool. Pay one way or another. Once Duffer stated that he used a spacer to get the correct width, my mind was made up. Let’s see how I can make this work.
