I put a 99 Audi A4 1.8 turbo motor in my 89 VW Vanagon. What you may not realize is the addicting sound of that turbo whistle. I find myself driving that van harder because of it. Because mine replaced a stock 2.1 NA flat 4 the differences were many besides the turbo. I like how yours will be a back to back comparison of the same vehicle with the addition of a turbo.

The turbo muffles the exhaust considerably so I opted for a free flowing 2.5" Dynomax glass pack. Vanagons have less area for an exhaust than a Jeep. From turbo to exhaust tip is about 24" including the muffler. It has a deep burble when you have your foot in it, and a whistle when you let off between shifts, but is very quiet in normal driving.

If you are going to plumb an intercooler, I used a Saab 900 unit. It is pretty small and they're always available on eBay.

I have ZERO room for an intercooler. I’ll be lucky if I can fit everything else.

You're just not thinking creatively enough, just put an air-air cooler on the hood.

Normal people never find out who they really are.

That said, some of us are planning to come over for an Intervention.

My little flex has 3.5 nonturbo the Expedition has 3.5 twin turbo. The non Turbo with 4500 lbs scoots. The Turbos with 5500lbs and a jeep in tow is just as quick.

I run the Buick 231 Turbo SFI in ' Rosie' . It's Even- Fire. Outta the Hole with the LSD , I light up her tires . That's when empty . The top end is WAYYYY to quick for a CJ5 .
Loaded with tools , she goes fairly balanced through her range,......plenty of power & torque .

    Minor update…

I changed the air filter. Roughly 8500 miles. With the intake opening where it is, I fully expected this thing to be a total mess. Not bad at all, actually. Dirty, but not caked.

It's a Volvo. I thought they lasted longer if you didn't do any maintenance.

Yeah, the dryer vent hose disintegrated, so I tore it out a few months ago. It’s just been an opening in the firewall since. If I ever get around to adding turbo, the whole intake will get completely reversed and reconfigured, so I don’t want to put too much work into it in its current design.

Turbo install shouldn't take more than a long weekend, I can't wait for pics on Tuesday with the hill climb report.

Nothing much to update. She rolled 10k miles on the odometer yesterday taking my daughter for donuts, but because of the way the GPS odometer records miles, the actual milage is a fair bit higher than that. Zero problems to report, other than an annoyance with the plug wires randomly popping off. It needs a tuneup. It’s still running the factory wires.

We took it wheeling last weekend…

On the way there, I filled the tank to around 90% (the needle pointed to F, but not above). We ran that thing all day on Saturday, and as I was hooking it up to drag home that evening, I’d noticed that the gauge hadn’t moved. I then drove it to work every day last week, and the gauge is still reading just above 1/4 tank. I’m guessing it gets somewhere in the realm of 23-24 mpg. I know it gets better milage than my car, and that gets 20-21 mpg.

I’ve started messing with a gear splitter box that might fit between my trans and t-case. This would get my CR up from my current 40:1 to 99:1 while still having my 40:1 as a mid-range option. It’s currently in a bin in my kitchen. I need to take the mainshaft in to work and see how badly I can screw up the lathe.

Turbo is still on the back burner, I just need to make the time to make it happen.

I kept a T90 and D18 assembly under my kitchen table once. The smell really added to the flavor of my cooking!

    You know…..
There is a once in a lifetime rubicon trip coming up this summer. It could be a long time before we are wheeling with snow in the shade in July!
