    Hello Gentlemen,

I would like to purchase a wiring harness for my 1968 CJ-5 F-134 , 4cyl. I have all stock equipment with no extras and do not plan to add any electrical extras.

Would either of these kits work for me?

Would anyone recommend one over the other?

Thank you in advance for help and sugestions.

    Lee

Walck's 4wd sells a properly made wiring harness, fully labeled. Should be a direct fit. http://www.walcks4wd.com/ A little spendy, but all the work is done, just hook it up.

Do you want a factory style harness? The EZ Wire harness s popular, but it is a "hot rod" harness, meant to supply a harness for a vehicle that is being built from the ground up. It will work fine, but the original harness is of a different design, with no fuse panel. The original harness has some inline fuses, and I believe the original light switch has a circuit breaker that protects the lighting.

You can get a factory-style harness from the Jeep specialist retailers. This harness will replace the original harness exactly, and have the same circuits and same wire colors as the original harness. Maybe Walck's has what you want? http://www.walcks4wd.com/Category/Wiring-Harnesses-Parts/145 - their web site is buggy, but if you call them they can tell you price and availability of a harness for your Jeep.

Functionally, both styles of harness will work fine. The hot-rod harness will have a different circuit diagram and different wire colors from the original harness, and you will have to adapt it to whatever components you use.

I took a look at what Walck's has and like the idea it is factory style and I am leaning in that direction as I have tried to keep my restoration as close to stock as I can. But the idea of a fuse panel sounds like a good idea.

Any pro's or con's with the fuse panel other than it is not stock.

I just rewired my '69 using the EZ Wire. I am happy with the results. I liked the idea of a fuse panel, makes it harder for me to short something out and start a fire. If I blow a fuse, I know just where to look.

Unless you are going for a true resto, the EZ wiring is far superior in every way. It is labeled every 5" down the wire as to what its for, the fuse blaock is easy to mount and puts the fuses all in one place and easy to get to and easy to replace. The wire I am sure is of much better quality thaa a kit that duplicates the factory. I have had my EZ kit for around 8 years now, in fact I'm the 1st one that mentioned it on this site around 10+ years ago, for the money impossible to beat.

The fuse panel is considered an upgrade. 12 circuits is more than you need, but most automobiles have fuse panels with unused circuits. The inline fuses on the factory harness are simple and adequate, but not as convenient. Realize that there are only a handful of fuses in the factory harness, so it's not much of a handicap IMO.

The factory harness will match the wiring diagram in the factory service manual, so that's something of an advantage. All the colors, circuits, lengths and connectors will be correct. For the universal harness, you'll need to cut the wires to length and splice on your connectors, typically from the existing harness.

It just depends on which issues make a difference to you. I would not hesitate to use the universal harness, if I were starting from nothing ... but I'm also good at electrical stuff.

So what do you recommend for a frame up restoration timgr,
I am replacing every inch of wire and starting from scratch?
i am at the bare frame now, is this a good time to do the wiring?
Should i wait until the tub and engine are in?
    Please advise.
    Best regards
    Terry

Up to you. If you want a restoration, then you need the original harness. Anything other than factory equipment is not a restoration.

You need the tub and engine in place to do the wiring. Trying to do it from the load back would only be possible if you had a bare fuse block to wire to. Kits are already wired up at the fuse block so you must run the wires to the loads.
