Hot wire to test engine?

    Hello Gentlemen,

First before I get to the meat of my question, I started my first rebuild last February 1968 CJ-5, F-134 and have the chassis 99. % completed. I rebuilt / serviced the frame, drive train, axles, differentials, steering, knuckles, ignition, carburetor, suspension, brakes, master cylinder, e-brake, bearings, seals and gaskets and have posted several questions and used the search function extensively.

I can’t tell you how grateful I am to this forum and all the jeep gurus for the expert advice. Thank you!

My question is: can and should I (hot wire) the engine while I am working on the body to test and run it occasionally while doing the body work. The body needs extensive work and it will probably take me about two months to complete the body work and will not be on the road until early spring. I intend to rewire once the tub is back on the frame.

Is there a simple way to wire to start and run the engine while doing the body work?

Can I do this for short periods of time without the radiator installed or should I install the radiator first?

How do I supply gas to the fuel pump?

Tim (timgr) I do have the information from your 2003 post on how to prime the oil pump, good tip.

Here is a before and after picture of the chassis.

    Lee

You have done a great job and should be proud. Personally I wouldn't worry about running the engine before spring, but it probably wouldn't hurt to squirt some oil in the cylinders and turn it over by hand every now and then. I don't think it is a good idea to run a water-pump dry.

If you want to start it, you can. Won't hurt anything, as long as it has oil in it and you don't run it too long. I would take the belt off and not run the water pump dry. But I agree with the above posts, you don't need to start it if you don't want to.

    Good work! :tea:

Probably better than factory. Looks like a perfect beginning. Meticulous for sure.

Thanks for the kind words regarding my progress. My wife and I are recently empty nester with one in college and one just out of college and I have retired from my part time job coaching ice hockey (still have the full time job) so working on the jeep has become my passion.

Thank you for the advice I think I will leave it alone as I am hoping to have the tub back on and wired to go in a few weeks.

Very tight jeep budget. I have kept most everything stock with no upgrades. Tried to fix or fabricate instead of buying new parts when I can. A lot of labor but it saves some money. My issue was, keep the part time job and have money to work on the jeep but no spare time or quit the part time job and have no spare money but more time. The wife has been great trying to set aside some extra funds for me, I think it's because it keeps me busy and out of her hair.R) She controls the money because if it was up to me it would be spent on the jeep and tools then food, in that order.:)

    Lee,
Great job on what you have done. I agree with theotherjmmy, squirt some oil in the cylinders and manually move the motor. I have used the marvel mystery oil in my cylinders through the spark plug holes and had good luck holding motors.

I agree with all the above. Very very nice job.
You dont realy need to let it run even if the body work will take longer then expected. Do it manualy and it will be just fine.
But ... Its not all mechanical. you and your Jeep have something more than that. I belive you want to hear the engine running for your heart and soul. Am i right? We have some feelings!
Do you have video shots of the jeep running? take a look on those shots from time to time, it will give you the right motivation to keep on.

Hawk and theotherjimmy, thank you I am going to put some marvel mystery oil in tonight and turn the engine by hand when I get home.
