An added on overdrive like a Warn, Saturn, Husky, etc. to an 18 transfer case requires NO modifications to the drivelines and no modifications to the speedometer gearing. It's truly a bolt on affair. I drove my Jeep ('59 CJ-5) with the stock running gear for years back and forth to school, work, etc. I know Patrick's CJ is darn near a daily driver for him as well. If the vehicle is maintained and in good operating order to begin with then there should be no issue driving it back and forth within the vehicles limitations. Hell, my CJ-5 was more dependable than my Wife's '90 Cherokee for a lot of years until I worked all the bugs out of the Cherokee.

as stated above-- this is not the 'case' with the overdrive we are referring to. It is a clever design that bolts to the rear of the t-case. It replaces part of the driveline, turning the output gear of the transmission into a two speed gear.

I daily drove mine for years. As with NickMil-- the CJ was often the only running vehicle in the house-- it was most reliable of the three. Imagine an early '5 loaded with 4 adults, driving from mid NJ and crossing Manhattan, to a family 4th of July party in Queens! :D

Well that warn od is the way I want to go but it will be a while I'm going to rebuild the 225 first and the brakes I just didn't know anything about the warn unit and Jeep put t5s in during the 80s...it still won't get the fuel mileage my truck does but it won't be 11-12mpg like my 65 Chevy truck was when I bought it....thanks guys

Your rig probably came with 4.88 gears and likely they are still there. The OD works very well with the 225/4.88/31 inch tires and will put you close to 18 mpg, especially if you keep the speed below 70. Best I ever got from that arrangement was 22 with a wicked Wyoming tail wind-a one time deal. An OD with 4.10's would also likely improve the mileage, but it will be less of an improvement because you will be pushing the 225 a bit as Tim noted. The 4.10/OD combo works very well with a V8 where you have a lot more torque lower in the rpm range.

Yea you very well could be right duffer I don't think my grandfather changed anything mechanically on the Jeep other than the hard top its stock as far as I know and that's cool at 18 mpg with od... my grandmother gave me the title and it's still in his name so I have to get some paperwork for her to sign and she said no problem so it will be coming home soon which is AWESOME :)
