Just wanted to know what size air tanks most folks run for on-board air?

I suppose that I really don't need any tank for just airing up tires. I have the large capacity York compressor.

if you have the York 210 thats the bomb , I bought a 3 gallon tank and had a hard time finding a spot for it ,I ended up using a 1 gallon Viar tank and its under the dash ,that tank has my pressure switch-145 /175 ,blow off 180 ,inlet ,outlet and water /oil bleed and gauge . works well and with 1 or 2 clicks of the hand throttle that pumps quick ........

I would run a tank so you can drain the yucky water that gets through..........

I met a guy recently that used old hospital oxygen tanks and plumbed them into his York system. I was a pretty sweet set up.

If you machine down the valve end of an aluminum medical O2 cylinder a bit, it will just fit between the frame rails. Not much storage-maybe 1.5 gal, but with the 10" York it works fine. Mounted mine transverse just in front of the rear axle and used a diesel fuel shut off valve for a tank drain so no need to get under Jeep.

A buddy of mine with a '79 CJ7/4.0L has a 5-gal tank mounted on the firewall under the batt tray, between the fender and the block. IIRC he picked up the tank at Tractor Supply. I'll look for a pic...
Its nice, we've run lots of air tools with it on the trail, including air ratchets and die grinders.

I'm asking because I picked up a used Firestone 3 gal tank with two ports and while it looked small enough when I bought it, it's huge when I try to find a place to put it in/on/under the Jeep. Plus I don't like that it's only 2 ports so don't have an independent way to drain water.

    This is it:

I looked online and see lots of options for anything from 1/4 gallon on up, but I think 1 gal through 2 would probably work better. I have zero experience in what to use though.

I have no idea how you guys running 3 gallon or up actually fit the tank, it just doesn't seem possible.

Norm, the bigger tanks fit well with the straight 6 in the space I described. My buddy couldn't get that 5-gal in there if he was running a V8.
He's out on berevement, his mother passed. I'll try to get pics in the next week or so...

I've seen some long tanks like yours installed under the rig, tucked up at the floor riser. Risk there is road/trail damage to lines, and risk of damage from driveshaft if you bust a ujoint.
You can have a drain installed if you know a welder qualified to weld on pressure vessels.

If it's just for airing up tires then I wouldn't bother with the tank. I ran a QuickAir 2 on the Jeep and now have a Chinese setup on my truck with no tank. Always figured the tanks were just for building capacity to spin air tools.

Thanks for that link. I searched last night, but all my hits seemed to be "gas" tanks, not "air" tanks.

I'll probably just eat the cost of the used tank that I bought and pony up for a small 1 gallon eventually. Sounds like I don't even need one if using the compressor for only tires...for now.

Norm , did you plug that oil passage in the pump, it helps but there is still oil getting through , and I have the filter and the tank .

No I did not. One article said it didn't make that much difference, but to be sure to use a good filter. I'm not sure that I'll plug it or not.

Have installed the Viair constant full pressure system with cockpit control on dash... came with a nice Viair three gallon tank as described... have mounted the tank beneath the rear floor with the compressor mounted adjacent to tank. Have small (blue) air pressure fittings (female) on front grill and rear tail-light panel (lower right)... system operates all air-tools (grinder, drill, sawzall, etc) with no pressure lag noted. Is extremely handy for use with the Premiere* Welding system (have mounted same* in dash glove-box). As others have noted... the tank has the purpose of increased capacity! I suggest use of a tank on any/all air systems to increase air volume capacity and decrease load on your compressor!

Easy enuff my friend, to add additional ports for assy use... purchase (JC Whitney is one source) the appropriate number of "bunges" (take your tank along to ensure correct size and radius of bottom of bunge for tanks skin, etc)... after or before welding the bunges onto the tank... drill the tank to allow entryway into the tank..... if you are not into welding... any welder or body shop will gladly tac and then weld your needed bunges in the area(s) you require for your drain quarter turn valve(s) and/or gauges. I had to add an additional port to my Viair systems Tank as well... is an easy addition!

Thanks for the tip. I'd love to see a pic of your installed air tank if you have any. I think the one I have is just plain too big. I've been looking online and for roughly $50 I can get all sorts of smaller tanks that will probably fit better in/on/under the CJ.

Will be glad too... have a short (hopefully) delay due to Ulnar nerve transposition surgery on right elbow.. and tendon lengthening... anyway.. will do my best to ask my son or... to get images for photobucket... during the delay for your minds eye.. the tank and compressor are mounted beneath rear floor against the vertical heel steel-wall.
Oh... the size of my Viair tank is 2.5 gallons (not three gallons as I mis-stated previous... I apologize) and has small rail-mounts on either end with assorted bunge openings on each end, top and bottom sides.
Viair does have this particular tank available for purchase... also the safety valve, wiring, control panel and more are also available... or can procure via JC Whitney and/or other Vendors as well.

As promised, here are a couple pics of my buddy John's OBA and tank.
It's a 5-gal tank installed in his '79 CJ running a '94 ZJ 4.0L engine (note pics were taken when the original 258 was in place)
He did have to relocate the battery tray.
