X2! The second video is more defining, points more to gear whine after all. Definitely different than mine sounded. I'd be surprised if another intermediate gear would help anything. I'm really in wonderment about the damage to the low range side of the intermediate gear, that's not even driving anything unless in low range. And I'm scratching my head at how that one tooth is flat on the one side, no curvature to it.

Well, gear whine is what I suspected in the beginning, hence trying to identify the original intermediate gear as a OEM or a repro, or as the source of the noise.

It's possible that the TC output shaft gear has some damage. I have inspected it as best I can with the TC pan off.

I probably would have driven in low range for the brief time that that chipped inter gear was installed. That would explain the marks on the low range side. The noise was no different as a result of installing that gear. It was the same before installation and after removal.

I guess if the output shaft gear was damaged then the original intermediate gear would show some damage, but it doesn't.

I called the local MVPA president and he trusts a transmission shop in town for work on old transmissions/transfer cases. I'll get over there next week.

This will eventually get solved, I'll post when it does.

Thanks to everyone for the help!

I have the same maltise cross logo on an intermediate gear right in front of me. It is original as far as i can tell. came out of a very cruddy T case that i bought for parts. I doubt it ever had a rebuild. does the noise go away in 4 hi? how about when switching into od

Thanks for that post!! I believe the gears to be original, and I think you have confirmed it....I've emailed the PO whose family owned it since 1960 and he does not believe it's ever been rebuilt or exchanged...

So, as a result of this thread, I've started looking elsewhere...previously I've focused on the TC...to much so maybe...

Today I drove it for quite a while, trying different things...

At 30 mph, in 2nd gear OD, no noise.....if I shift into third and maintain 30, the noise appears.....there is something in the tranny...probably the main gear/main shaft roller bearings or the mating surfaces....

I think they both will come out for a careful rebuild and some new shafts....

    Problem Solved!!

There is still a little noise but you would expect that...right from starting out in first gear I could tell the TC was a lot quieter, and all through the gears whether it be in direct or OD it was 98% quieter...there is still a small whine at around 40, probably gear mesh noise with the original output shaft gear, which was not changed, but that is just fine!

So once again, I swapped out the intermediate gear. I bought a used gear set from Herm, and though one tooth on the intermediate gear was slightly chipped (#%#&!!) in shipping from banging against the other gears, I dressed it out and it works just fine....

This jeep was used mostly as a power unit for farm implements, so whenever the PTO was in use the intermediate gear would have been spinning....it just wore out the bore I guess.

Pictures here...some are of the replacement gear and it's chip, and some of the old original gear...the pics are labeled..

Glad you got it fixed! That's a new one on me that the bore was causing the whine.

    Thanks Glenn,

I don't know if it was the bore or the teeth or a combination of both....the teeth looked OK to me, but since the bore has that hatched pattern that is what I suspect, but I'm just guessing really......I can't tell you how pleased I am that this is fixed....I've been trying to solve it since June at least...

The intermediate roller bearings were good...I replaced(for the second time)both the intermediate shaft and bearings in September......I spun and listened to all the other bearings and they sounded good...they were all replaced in early 2013.....I think I'm good to go.....

'cuz Dana doesn't make them anymore.
All now are offshore manufacture if buying new.

It's not new...it is used, bought from Herm...as mentioned...Herm sold me the full set, all of which were marked the same......I've yet to see a TC gear from around 1951 that is marked with a Dana logo...
