I haven't updated my build thread recently because progress has been slow due to more than a few family issues that took priority. But I'm at the point where I need to order up my fan. For those that haven't been following, I am putting a '99 Chevy 4.3 FI V6 into my '42 flatfender. I went with a nice Griffin 2 core aluminum crossflow radiator. What CFM rating fan would you recommend with the set up in SoCal weather? I need to stick with a 14" fan due to space restrictions, and the electric fan will be the only cooling mechanism I have - no room for a mechanical or even a pusher in front of the radiator. Looking at this one: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hfm-zfu14s/overview/

    Any input is appreciated.

That is the same fan I have on mine, except it is set up as a pusher.....It moves a lot of air. It is my only cooling, so far it has done fine in my shop. I do have a Champion 3 core so that helps as well.

You can look over a two speed taurus fan. Easy to find in junkyard and move a lot of air. This fan will have a shroud that will cover almost all of you're radiator for better effiency.

    here the dimension

Trying to remember but i seem to remember seeing a nissan or toyota full size suv that had a really nice fan that i thought would work perfect in a cj. Been awhile since i worked on one so cant remember:oops:

I was hoping you'd chime in...My radiator is a bit smaller than yours, but seeing the over-cooling issues you seemed to have had, I think I'd be ok....I was looking at that exact fan on summit (although it was considerably more expensive) but moved on because I thought the CFM might not be enough....

I'm thinking of building a mounting plate similar to the one you went with, maybe just offsetting the plate about 1/2" from the core and sealing around the radiator with some kind of weather stripping. I dont want to mount the fan directly through the core - I just dont trust the "zip tie" mounts. The problem is finding aluminum plate around here - everyone wants to sell full sheets only, and I really don't have a use for what would be left over.

Yeah, Im a junk picker and thats how I wound up with aluminum plate. I agree that the zip ties aren't a good idea.

The CFM is plenty for my purposes. The radiator is too big, but once you get everything fully warm, it works fine and is pretty even on temp with it bottoming out at about 175 and at idle without fan on to 195~200 before fan kicks on (195 temp switch) and then drops to 180 sitting at a red light 80 degrees or so.

The fan pulls a lot of amps but works well. There are many more expensive ones out there and they might work better for longer. Time will tell on this one, but so far its been good.

I bet your engine would like to run al the time at 200 or so.

I went with a 175/190 switch, so I anticipate the fan running the majority of the time the engine is turning. We shall see. My alternator puts out 105 amps so I'm not too worried about that. Getting closer to testing it out. Finished all the electrical, just need to select an electric fuel pump (need 60 psi) and decide weather or not to keep the CJ-2A tank (external pump) for now or wait and just buy the aftermarket fuel cell I eventually want to install (internal pump).

I have a three row radiator and I'm using 2 12" fans. The other weekend one of the fans was making noise so I was down to one. On the trail one fan is not quite enough to keep it cool. It didn't overheat just ran hot. one 14" fan should be enough to cool the engine if you make a shroud.

For the alternator, he can give 105 amp at some rpm, but you need to know how much amp it give at idle. having an electric fuel pump so you have some kind of injection set-up. From my view you will need a minimum output at idle of 60-70 amp if you don't want to burn out you're alternator.

I respectly had the delco 10si and 12si and kill both of them. Finaly went with a CS144 that give a strong 80 amp at idle and 140 amp at 1000 rpm on my engine.

I'm swapping a 4.3 FI Vortec into my 42. The motor is stock, as is the alternator. I figure if it can run everything in the 99 S-10 it came out of, it should be fine in my jeep. At least that's my thought process

in that case, you stay oem, only thing maybe the add of amp draw with the electric fan.

Any good swaps for a v6 Buick 225? Radiator and fan. 14-16" fan is largest I can go with my radiador being about 16x18
