I installed a fuel pressure regulator before the Solex carb last weekend. I tried to start it and i killed the old battery.
Tonight i pulled the new battery out of my Wrangler to try and get the jeep running.
Well It wanted to. I got a can of starting fluid and it will "fire" but it just wont run. I tried the rotate the wires on the cap method just in case i was off. I did get a backfire out of the carb a few times and that at least let me know i was probably 180 out. So i put the wires back to where i started and then twisted the distributer around to see where i can find the spot where it will run. I previously did the "static timing" but it just didnt want to run. So i can get it to fire but not run so i am getting spark.
I honestly think i just have two really bad carbs. I just cant get it to run and the starting fluid only gets it to fire for a second but nothing else. :(

Take the fuel line from the pump to a very clean container as make sure it is send gas to the carb, please. Crank the engine check the amount of fuel in the container

You aren't getting fuel. Can you see fuel squirt when you look down the carb and work the throttle?

So why is not running on fuel then ?
If you say it's getting plenty, then using the starting fluid doesn't make any sense.

Did you have the distributor out since it ran? If so, I would start over by pulling it to TDC and making sure it is right.

Yeah. That "twist it and try it" method never worked for me.

    Get out the FSM.
Check the wire sequence and clocking in the cap.
Set the points, set the timing.

Start with one "known good" step, then the next.

This whole engine does not make sense to me. That is why it is killing me.
I have started at TDC so many times it just isnt funny.

I do know that it is smoking like insane out of the vent from oil fill tube into the metal cross over pipe. i do not have the air tube connected to the carb top and smoke is coming out. That is bugging me. i already checked all the valves and do not know where the smoke is coming from

Is the valve/cam timing definitely correct?

    Done a compression test?

    Yes it is.

compression is between 75-85. not great but should fire

Have you verified TDC at the #1 cylinder - could the pulley mark be 'off?'

Cleaned and set the points? Then wiped them with a business card or clean paper between them?

    Verified TDC

    No marks on pully.
The Flywheel has been swapped 180 by previous owner

Nice new points, Set correctly. I am getting spark.

    Maybe it's the carb? :D

    Sorry…

In this situation, the best thing I know to do is to start it by towing, or better, rolling down a long hill. Works miracles.

Are you sure you're at TDC on #1 on the compression stroke and not on the exhaust stroke?

Had the same with my 3a, PO rebuilt the engine and turned the flyway around. Hard to time until I went back to basics. #1 at TDC on compression measured with a ruler to be sure exactly on top. Made sure distributor clocked right, plug wires in correct order and rotated distributor until points just starting to open. Fired right up and timed by ear.

Does it have timing gears and not a chain? Timing gears distributor turns counter clockwise.

I will go back in it tonight and start again.

Now I have seen the distributer rotate a million times but i cant remember off the top of my head if it was CW or CCW
I even flipped the wires opposite directions yesterday to try that.

I have done the finger over the hole method for finding TDC. Stupid question, will i get pressure on Exhaust stroke? I have also put the compression gauge on it and looked at the pressure as it rises to the TDC.

Condensor is new. It is getting spark just fine.

Only other thought i had was I did adjust the valves when i had it apart. Is there a way that i could totally screw up the valves and make it not start? I believe i got the adjustment right, but there is always a way to fail.

I pulled distributer and found it was not right and had to pull oil pump to fix. The clocking is correct.

Another thing i noticed last night and need to bring up. I got a new cap for the autolite distributer a while ago, and when twisting it last night i noticed that likes to come off the distributer. The clips do not like to hold onto it good. It is on the distributer but just does not feel right. I know there are two different size caps. Are the size difference night and day, or could the larger cap fit on the smaller distributer?

"Objection, your Honor... the witness has been witholding information!"

The cap should fit very snug, and with a cog that allows it to fit precisely in only one position.

Anything less, and I'd say try swapping it. AND make sure you have a matching rotor, also keyed properly.

It fits the lug, it doesnt "spin" it just seems to easily get knocked off. either because the metal clips dont hold it enough or a little larger. I did try to put an Fhead cap on and it fit the same.
