So i mucked up the original pinion when cutting off the yoke and have to drop in a new gear set. Probably for the best as I found the ring gear and bearings quite pitted and beat up. Probably from water intrusion in the past.

I currently have the carrier setup with it's new bearings and the new ring gear.

I ordered DANA gears and a DANA bearing set. The shims that came with the kit for the pinion are nothing like the original shim and are meant to go under the bearing instead of under the race, I guess this is a common issue looking around online. I assume this isnt' a huge deal just adjusting at a different spot.

Problem for me is the original stock shim measures .0975 and the largest the new shims go if I stack them all together is .0625. The thinnest shim in the new kit is .0100

The original pinion is I believe +4 (looks like someone electropenciled +4 onto the pinion) and the new one says +10. So I need to add around .006 to the new pinion's shim to get to about where I need to be. I'm bad at math and this is my first rodeo with setting up gears but I do have experience rebuilding gas turbines and reciprocating engines and did some time in a machine shop so precision measuring isn't new to me but this specific job is.

I'm thinking of setting everything up with the original shim and see where it leaves me. But I'm open to other ideas as well. Maybe adding in one of the .0100 shims on initial setup?

I don't have any setup bearings but could turn the old bearings into setup bearings if need be.

    Thanks for any ideas/help.

Setup bearings make life MUCH easier. A sanding drum on a Dremel tool worked well enough to make mine.

X2 on the set up bearings. If the original shims are in serviceable condition you can reuse them. I have a collection differential shims, if need a few post up ID and OD. I can send you some. Ron
