I have acquired a dana 30 narrow track axle. It was in a 73 cj5 what was involved in a fairly bad frontal collision. My question is can anyone think of a way to check the axle for any bends or twist or alignment. There is no apparent damage visible. The only way I can think of is mount the axel in the jeep and take it to an alignment shop and have them check the caster consistency from side to side and also the camber for consistency side to side. I had rather check it someway without mounting it in the jeep if possible.
    Thanks

Straight edge along the axle tubes?

Magnetic angle finder like this. https://www.amazon.com/Wixey-WR300-Type-Digital-Backlight/dp/B00T6YZ0K6/ref=sr_1_5

I would first test that the axle tubes are still co-axial. A bend in the housing would be the most likely damage. The typical damage (due to rat patrol action) is a bend of the long tube in the socket of the cast housing, and likely the same due to an impact. Set the axle on jack stands and see if you get the same angle from both tubes. I would try to rotate the axle completely; pinion up, down, left, right. The angle finder only works with the plane of finder vertical, so you'll need to rotate the axle and keep the orientation of the finder the same.

You should be able to test rotation of the knuckles too, but that seems unlikely.

Thanks Tim, I knew you would know what to do. That is a good idea,I have one of those magnetic angle finders. I may weld some temporary pieces of angle iron to the top of my jack stands to make axle rotation easier.
I did stretch a string across from the top of each knuckle to knuckle and measured down to the tube all along and got the same measurements, However I just was not quite sure that was accurate enough.

I think you scored a good , straight D30, Brother . The string line was a good show.
