I’m driving Up to Bonney lake tomorrow to look at an early warn for $150. Guy says it works but seemed stumped when I asked him if he could test it. I’m guessing it just needs jumper cables from a a battery to the motor housing and touch the positive post on the motor and see if she spools. Is that right? Anything else? It looks like the brake lever is broke also from the pictures.

Yes, with a battery and jumper cables you can test the motor. Looks like the brake lever is missing and the shift lever is broken.

Hmm worth the drive for the price you think? It’s about 2 hours away

meh, I think I'd keep looking for an M6000, M8000, or even a 8274 if you have the coin.

Parts for a 5687 winch are gonna probably be scarce, and I think those don't have important features like a modern brake system and power out?

It seems easy to test but it must be tested in full action, to see if it works after 50 seconds, with something to tear... If there is a doubt on the seller of course.

Eh I’ll pass for now. I have been holding out for an 8274.

Warn has long ago stopped support for these winches. From Herm, it looks like the two parts you would need cost about $110.00.

Last year, I followed Duffers brake upgrade that he did to his winch years ago. It was a fun project and actually not very expensive. I documented the project under "Winches".

Lastly, I found a reversable motor for these winches. I would have to look again for the link if someone wanted it. I don't remember the cost of that motor.

I have 3 of that style. I believe Warn's last rendition of that had the same brake as the 8274 and power out. In a lot of ways, they are much more robust than an 8274. They do weigh a lot more. I've never had one fail me back in the sticks. For $150, if it runs, it isn't a bad deal. Way better than any of the chinese crap on the market.

Honestly I’d probably buy it if it were 2 hours in any direction but into the Seattle/Tacoma area. I drove up there last weekend to buy that pellet stove and I’m still grumpy about it.
