I'm going to be needing new skins on my recently acquired 1961 CJ-5. I don't anticipate much off road time so I'll be looking for something akin to a mud/snow type tread. What would be the current metric size equivalent that would be close to factory stock? Also, any online sources w/decent prices for said tires? Thanks in advance.

Would be helpful to know a bit more about what wheels you are mounting the tires on...Do you have 15 or 16" rims? Are they original style 4.5" wide?

235/75R15 are good on a stock height CJ.

I’d say something approximately 29 to 30” tall would be best if you’re at stock height. If you don’t know how to do the math, there’s a calculator here: Tire Height Calculator

I'll second the 235/75-15 if you are running stock 15" rims. These are slightly taller than what my '64 came with from the factory. A 225/75-15 is very close to the original H78-15.

I have 225/75-15 on my Jeep with 3:73 1966 axels, wanted to keep the speedometer close to right. I drive on sand Fire Trails and two lane Black Top.

I went with 225 over 235 to make sure they wouldn't rub the leaf springs.

After a 6 week hiatus due to a death in the family and being appointed the Estate's Personal Representative, I'm back to working on my 1961 CJ-5. I have 15"X 4.5" tube type wheels. The wheels are in good shape and the tubes look like new, so I'll probably use both. Thanks for any tire size suggestions.

I was thinking about going to 31x10.5R15s since I have a 2" spring lift over stock. WHat do you think about that choice?

    Mine came with 225/75-16
    [IMG]

I wanted a little more height and sidewall give so I went 245/7-16. But I also lifted it 2.5” and think she looks perfect.

This gave me marginally less RPM thus increased my crushing speed. I didn’t really notice much low speed issues, but I had the pin removed on my h/l sifter so I can sift into low without going into 4wD.

The '69 I keep posting photos of in the "Show Us Your Jeep!" thread has 31x10.50 tires on 15x7 wheels with 2.5" lift ProComp springs. I think the tire size matches the lift well:

I'd vote yes. Looks muscular without being ridiculous.

And doesn't require an engine upgrade.

Thanks much! I like the patina it has so I've been going through the mechanicals making everything work right but leaving the look as is.
