tcase.jpeg So i was under the XJ today and looking for some looseness in the rear driveshaft and there is some movement at the Tcase end of driveshaft. But it does not look like it is the Ujoint, but the output of the Tcase. I have worked on many YJ/TJ NP231 Tcases but i have not seen a 231 with this type of output. it looks factory but very odd to me, the rear shaft is not supported and sticks out far from the gear box. The shaft does seem to have side to side movement inside the case itself. Nothing outrageous but there is some movement that I do not think is right. Is this Tcase a factory unit or has it been modified at some point? I has no slip yoke, and does not look like a SYE.

Fairly sure that style output in 231s were from ‘96 and up. The yoke slips into the boot just the same as any other slip yoke setup. Those are the transfer cases that later Jeep owners like for doing the common “hack and tap” style SYEs. All factory stuff there. (y)

So it is actually a slip yoke?
Then yeah i will get my son to buy a SYE kit.
I do not like that there is a little play in it, it just seems so weak.
I was wondering why there was a Tcase drop on this jeep if this is not a slip yoke.
But you guys gave me my answer.

    Thanks!
