I’ve had this guy since about 2015 or so. I originally picked it up mostly to get it out of the coastal weather at my parents house in Humbolt county CA. It spent most of its life in Red Bluff and Modesto but that decade or so towards the coast wreaked havoc on the body.

anyway I’ve messed with it a bit a few times trying to get it running. The starter and I believe injection pump shut off are already converted to 12v. She cranks well, fuel shut off solenoid clicks but it’s not pulling fuel. There’s an aftermarket clicker pump I believe that’s dead between the factory pump and tank.

I guess the question is it should start on starter fluid, right? Even briefly? I tried a few squirts and it seems to kick back against the starter. So maybe someone could enlighten me on this 2 stroke diesel thing. I’m guessing it last ran 20-30 years ago. Usually if Im messing with a gasser that hasn’t run in awhile I’ll confirm it will run with starter fluid or gas in the Venturi before dumping money and time into it. I’d like to do the same here.

If I’m being honest I really like the Kubota engine idea. But there are so few running cerlists around it seems like I list at least try.

So besides probably replacing that clicker pump and replacing all the rotten rubber hose, where to start without sinking too much time and money into it on the front end to confirm it’ll run? I realized starter fluid Is an awful idea but I don’t know what else to try. And shockingly there’s no YouTube videos of “how to bring your cerlist back to life “.

Also I’ve never taken many pictures of it. So I finally took a few today while it was out of its hidey hole. Here ya go

I've honestly never messed with a Cerlist, but I've played with lots and lots of 2-stroke Detroits, and I'd suspect they're just like any other internal combustion engine. Check compression, make sure it bars over relatively easily (for certain values of $easy) make sure whatever shutoff mechanism the engine has works, and try some bangwater.

Since it kicks back I wonder if the exhaust is plugged up?

That’s a thought. The stack does smoke when cranking but I’ll have a look. Could be maybe a nest partially blocking.

The kick back is compression lock from the bang juice get an clean can of fuel and a piece of fuel line and gravity feed it to the injection pump make sure shut off is opening and crank on it for a few seconds at a time you may need to bleed the injectors just crack open the bango fitting on the injector and it should fire

I think it would be cool to get it running as original since it would certainly be unique.

Bus Grease Monkey seems to favour WD40 for starting diesels, apparently the secret to doing it safely is to only spray in the intake as the engine is turning over.

I had success with sprays inside carburetor and engine through spark plug holes to clean inside so why not ?
It is a cheap solution, valve cleaners.

The m677 is the only vehicle I think I would skip work and abandon the wife at home with all the kids to go fetch... using her truck.

Just a thought. That engine is rare and not something you want to wear out consumables on. You could do the Kubota swap and save the original engine on a run stand.

Well that’s interesting. I imagine the lube properties would be somewhat better than bang juice. Maybe I’ll try that tomorrow. If it would make some semblance of engine noises that would probably motivate me to move it to the barn and dive in.

Haha tucked in that corner in the first picture. Usually hidden behind the Ram. For some reason I just have a mental block against really diving into it. Mostly because I have very little knowledge of these 2 stroke diesels.

Omg.... I've wanted one of those since the first time I ever saw one. You have a rare beast there. Definitely going to follow along, good luck.

FWIW, I think most old diesels follow the same principles, so what would work for an old detroit or IDI Ford would probably work for the Cerlist, right? Note: I may be completely wrong.....

Also mix some marvel mystery oil in with a little diesel and run it through the pump and injectors to lube them and loosen up accumulated gunk.

You really just need to give up and send the truck over to me on the other side of the state.

The other thing to note is the rest of the electrical is all 24v, I imagine including the glow plugs. So that should add another degree of difficulty. The jeep came with a switch relay type thing as well that appears to allow you to separate 12v for starting from 24v for the rest of the electrical system.
