I recently bought a 1971 dauntless cj5. Welp, when I finally got to see it in person I quickly realized it has a later Buick 231 and had a terrible knock in the trans/clutch with the pedal out.

I pulled the T14 and opened a medium sized can of worms. The clutch linkage/pedal assembly isn't correct for the year, the cluster gear and second are gear missing multiple teeth and there’s a brazed repair under the top cover. The throw out bearing was barely in the fork because the retainer was broken. The clutch was adjusted so far out you could only shift in the middle of the pedal throw ect ect.

I’ll attach photos but could definitely use help identifying problems/what is what here. I think I may go with a hydraulic clutch but would appreciate any input.

The ball stud for the clutch arm looks to short and there should be no washers under it.
Is the bellhousing the one with an adapter cast into it as its suppose to be? The linkage for the clutch is wrong, should be a cable, obviously the hanging pedals was a crap set up from the picture. How does the steering look? The transmission is just gonna have to be rebuilt or replaced if you can't find the gears.

steering is later and has the Saginaw box on the frame rail outside of the grill, I have a T98 I’d like to put in but the input is about an inch longer I was thinking of water jetting an adapter plate at that thickness. Yeah there’s a lot of suspect stuff going on here.

The pedals and clutch linkage look the exact same as my 68 J2500 has/had.

as to clutch plate . I've never had any luck with a flat diaphram pressure plate with the 71 bell
3 finger borg-beck is all that worked for me ( it's much taller ) . so I am guessing that's why the stacked washers
your hanging pedal set up just needs a little more fine tuning . have seen that set up in 80's model jeep

I’ve got a 71 as well as a 71 parts Jeep. Both bell housings are the longer type with the adapter plate built in. Both have that same ball stud setup, which is to short and contributes to a stiff clutch. I’ve searched for longer studs that, like the one pictured thread in from inside the bell housing. I’ve been unable to find anything that fits the threads in the bell housing.

X2 on Ron’s comments regarding the pressure plate. Yours is the “flat” type diaphragm fingers. You need the style where the fingers extend higher, or a 3 finger Borg &Beck style.
Your pedal assembly looks like that used on a ‘72 Intermediate CJ. Its not too bad “IF” all those ball joints are in good shape and tight.
Yes, you have good reason to consider a different transmission. Just be warned, this opens up a whole new can of worms!

Is that Saginaw conversion done with leaving the factory front dump drivers side exhaust manifold?

LUk 04021 raised finger diaphram works on 70 & 71 cable operated clutch. Rock auto lists flat diaphram which won't release clutch. Ash me how I know.

Thanks for the info! My thought process right now is to get an advanced adapters adapter plate for the 231 to T98 that I have and purchase the Novak hydraulic clutch assembly. I prefer the T98 to the T14 for obvious reasons and it MAY save me a rebuild.

There’s nothing to write home about with the conversion. Here’s some photos.
