Battery cable size is critical on the 6 volt systems. Your typical car battery cables will not be large enough. Here is s snip from the Willys Tech Archives explaining it all. I have the 8 volt battery in my 48 and it makes a world of difference and doesn't hurt the gauges or other 6 volt items.

    SNIP:

Recently there has been a bit of chatter regarding 6 volt systems. Here is
a tip for the 6 volt crowd (like me). The modern day 4 gauge battery cables cannot carry enough amperage from your battery to spin your starter motor as quickly as it needs to spin. Swap out your +/- and starter cables for at least 0 (pronounced single ot) gauge cables. You will be amazed at the difference in starting power. These should be availble at NAPA stores.
Better yet, check out some of the solar battery sites like
    http://www.aapspower.com/batac.html or
http://www.newenglandsolar.com/catalog_pages/catalog58.htm , these companies sell 4/0 (four ot) cables custom made in black or red with the appropriate fittings.

These cables are as thick as your . . . thumb and are capable of carrying
200+ amps to your starter. This will solve your slow starter problems.

Make that starter spin and be proud of your unique 6 volt system!!!
