Still haven't found the actual serial number of my new MB, but a data tag on the dash has some interesting info. The Jeep was "rebuilt" 2/2/49 in Germany. The contractor? Daimler-Benz. They stamped a serial number on the plate of Q 666 (Devil Jeep?)

I know for certain that in postwar Germany there was a serious shortage of civilian vehicles. So bad was the shortage, that the US Gov't ran a bunch of MB/GPW Jeeps through hastily setup 'depots' to do an IRAN (inspect & repair as needed) and then they shot a coat of gloss black over the whole Jeep. They were then sold to through a raffle system at teh PXs all over Europe to give the GIs in the Army of Occupation something to tool around in, and to take the family to the PX in on Saturday. Mebbe your Jeep was one of those? Any evidence of old, black paint on it? When the GIs rotated back stateside, the government paid to ship household goods, and one "car".

    Hi Mike,

The MB was supposed to have the tag on the frame rail just behind the front bumper, drivers side I think, on the gusset, facing the other frame rail. Obviously the serial number there was supposed to match the number on the data plate on the dash or glove box door, but after some of those depot rebuilds the body didn't always match the frame when they were re-assembled. As many jeeps seem to get Bubba Bumpers this tag often gets cut off or removed in the proccess. You'll have a body number stamped on the drivers side toe-board gusset, but this number doesn't mean too much. Some folks on the Gee (http://www.g503.com/forums/index.php) are documenting these numbers just to try to fit another piece of the puzzle together. Good luck on your project!

Thanks JAB, I'll check. Since mine has the original bumper and tow bar it might be there.

If that towbar is truely original it's quite rare & valuable. I don't recall if mounting it covered that plate or not. You may want to go here: http://www.g503.com/forums/index.php for more details.

I found the tag on the frame rail, but it is nearly unreadable. The only thing I can make out is the top line that says "Jeep - Willys" and the numbers P-080 or 030 in about the middle of the tag. attached is a pic of the bumper, original?? sure looks like it.

Yup! That sure does look original!!! You have a prime candidate there for a very valuable restoration!!!!! Get off this V6 forum & get on the Gee!!!! That's a piece of history that needs to be saved in it's original configuration!!!!
