new jeeper, lots of questions

Hello all,
Well to get started I would like to get info on upgrading the brakes on my 42 mb. two aspects..... 11" brake up grade......and info on different master cylinder setup.
I will be traveling to eastern oregon to bring it home after a brake failure........and now major rear sheet metal damage. Thank the Lord no one was hurt.

As an additional concern, 11 inchers wont work with stock wheels I don't think. I'm sure someone else can confirm but the brake drums may be too big to fit inside the wheel.

 

Hello Kimbob - re the 11" brakes, the kits from R&P are the least expensive I know of for a complete setup http://www.r-p4wd.com/site/product_pages/randp12.htm

If you're handy with machine tools and want to cut costs, there were lots of older vehicles that used the 11x2" Bendix brakes, including 60s F100 Ford trucks and some passenger cars - Mercurys were a common source for brakes. You'd need to modify the backing plates to fit. All the other parts are available new from your friendly local auto parts store (known as FLAPS here). You have to buy the backing plates used, and you may want to reuse good drums, but all the other parts can/should be sourced new.

My Uncle also has assorted parts for WW2 Flat fenders if you need anything. R&P stocks the brakes normally and are between Oregon City and Canby. Richard has a 3b with swinging pedals if you wanted to take a look and see how it can be done. Got pics? Nickmil.

I'm in the Milwaukie / Gladstone area. My 42 is stone stock so yes I am running MB axles. I have been to R&P and may get what I need from them ....but I get a kick out of junkyards so will go that route first. Thank you for all the info I will know where to start now when I go in search of brake parts. As I said I am headed to bring the 42 back to town to start repairs. As of now the only digital picks I have are after the incounter with the tree so it is a little crunched. And I have to admit I don't know how to get them on here. I'm sort of new to jeeps and computers so I am looking forward to all your tips. I will touch bases when I return with the 42. Again thanks to all.

Herm the Overdrive guy has a super handy Dual master cyl conversion kit available complete with braket instructions and either a new master cyl $125.00 or rebuilt $100.00 he is just north of use in Washinton. A super great guy to deal with.

I'm in the process of ordering one for my 48 2A right now. Just waiting back to hear how much shipping is.

Be sure to install a porportioning valve (adjustable would be best) In the rear line so you can adjust to get a straight stop without a rear skid.

IMHO you save money buying the full 11" brake kits especially when getting new drums and most come w powder coated backing plates

Welcome from SW VA. I have a '43 GPW with gosh darn good brakes. I'm sure a lot of people upgrade, but mine is all original. Heck, with some practice I'll bet you too can learn to almost never touch the brakes. Let your engine be your brake and down shift instead of hitting the pedal.

Sorry to hear of your accident. Even though this is a CJ5 site, you'll find plenty of support here with knowledge on how to make improvements and conversions for ealier jeeps.
