im going to go with the detroit ez locker

the thing is i can only afford one ... where do i want it for best snot proformance ... frount or back .. (i will also be useing ice tires with them pretty little sheet metal screws in them)

i know frount wheel driven car do ok in the snow.. sometimes better than rearwheel.. im gonna be driveing about 45 miles in the ice and show everyday ... (no choice im a guard) anyone have suggestions ... i do plan on putting one in the back as well but i only have the cash for one right now untill spring when its warm enuff to work on again ..

    thanks

also at 40 mph i have a tach reading of about 3900 rpms ... is this normal ? thats in 3rd gear .. in 2H

Well Josh, you pose some interesting questions. :D

First, 3900 rpms at 40 mph? Doesn't sound right. First, I'd get a tach/dwell meter and see if your tach is correct. It's possible your tach is a multiple-cylinder type and all you need to do is change a switch in the back from 4 or 6 to 8 cylinders. Or maybe it's not switchable, and is designed for 4 or 6 cylinder only and the PO stuck the wrong one in your rig.
Does the engine SOUND like it's running at 3900 rpm at 40?

For now, lets say the tach is right. Then you need to determine what gear ratio you have in the diffs. Get one rear wheel off the ground. Put a mark on the tire at the top, and a mark on the driveshaft. Rotate it forward TWO revolutions (assuming you have an open diff) and count the number of revolutions the drive shaft makes:
    4 1/2 would be 4.56
    4 1/4 would be 4.27
    4 and a tad would be 4.10
    3 3/4 would be 3.73

Running 33s with 3.73s for example should put you UNDER 2000 rpms at 40 mph.

Somewhere on the net there is an applet that will tell you what your rpms are at a given gear ratio and tire size.

As for the locker... if you are going to drive 45 miles in ice/snow daily, I would not put a lockright in.
If you must do it, I'd put it in the rear, leave the front open for better tracking and steering. You will experience steering issues with a front locker, especially on hills, road crowns or any off camber roads. And you'll experience understeer with a front locker in slippery conditions.

I run lockrights in my '71 front and rear. I simply do not drive it in any snow ice conditions.

I recommend buying a mid-90s Honda to commute... it will save on gas too ;)

well at idle its at about 750 or 800 i checked the dwell and timeing ... gear shifter says its in high .. and i do have 3.73s.... might be part of my overheating problem ... how can i tell if the dana 20 is in high by looking at the rods comeing out of the case to the shifter i would really like a pic of the t case shifter linkage in high 2 wheel gear ... thanks alot ... ill look into the tach ... sigh ... too meny problems ..

    Normal CJ D20 pattern:

    4H
    2H
    N
    4L

If by some odd chance someone stuck a FSJ D20 in your rig, the pattern would be:

    4H 4L
    l l
    2H _ N

Kind of a "U" shaped shift pattern.
Sorry I don't have pics of the shift rail positions...

Don't forget that 33's were not stock and that taller tires will effectively make your speedo read slower than actual speed. I don't buy 3900 @ 40 mph either however. Something isnt right. (duh)

Here is a calculator online you can use. There are many of these on the web. Maybe your in low range?

Lynn, yer not going to like what I have to say.

I have a front lockright in my XJ and had one in my CJ. I prefer to be able to direct the more effective traction than have it direct me. I'll add this. Way back in my youth I worked at a ski resort. Base was 8000 ft abv sea level. I could go anywhere I wanted 80% of the time w/ my stupid little FWD Honda civic & chains. Now skip ahead a dozen or more years. I live in some twisty steep country now ~3500 ft. Not a heckuva lot of deep snow but ice and sleet is common place. Really messy. My CJ did better than most 4x's I saw on the road. The trick is go slow and aim and shoot with regards to the steering and skinny peddle. I just couldn't stop. Thank goodness there are lots of trees to help me brake. :D

    IMHO & YMMV.

Brad... I've never driven with a front-only locker set up... so your experience is valuable input.

    (maybe I should take my rear one out... :? ;) :D )

would use a limited slip (powerlock) or if $$$$ allows selectable locker (ox, arb or elocker).

I would say if you are going to be in snow then go selectable, not that I listen to myself since I have an Aussie locker waiting to go into my front axle once it is broken in.

well ok at 25mph its a 2000rpms i checked the switch and its set on 8 ... it apperes to be in 2h because only the back wheels are turning and the shifter lever is all the way up ... i had to kinda repair the shifter lever because it was broke.... what i was thinking maybe the back diff is stuck in low and the frount is stuck in neutral? beause one of the rods comeing out of the transfercase looks to be all the way out (the right one ) and the (leftone) looks to be in somewhat ... but not as far out as the other ? i think here i really need a new shifter lever ... a twin stick would do me well ... and its just the regualar up and down shifter .... i gotta get all this done by the winter because its too cold to work on and i need a 4x4 for the show ... we also have alot of really hilly and twisty roads .. ill have to go threw in the snow and ice ... great fun ...
