I am in the process of restoring a 72 cj5. With a original color of mint lime green, I was told by the local paint supplier to body shops.

I understand this color was special for the renegade. My cj has the 304 build date Aug 22 1971 3 speed with track lock rear end. But it has a tailgate And thoughts would be appreciated. Sorry for upload new at this

Your Jeep should be "Lime Green". I believe the PPG code for that color is #2128.

    Color Chip Selection

In '72 they had the colors named after the off-raod racing venues, ie "Mint Green", "Riverside Orange" and "Baja Yellow." Apparently they could not come up with a racing-related name for the purple color.

So where is the "Sierra" race, nearby to Plum? These are all 999 special colors for the Renegade. My PPG reference chart just has "999 Lime Green 2128" with no reference to Mint. I never made the connection of "Mint" (or Baja, for that matter) to the famous race venues.

1972 was the first year that I started hanging around the Jeep dealership, and the names may not have been used before that. I remember these colors from back in the day - I'm sure the orange was called "Riverside Orange." For those who don't know, they ran closed-course off road races at the Riverside International Raceway (closed 1989). The Mint 400 Homepage and of course the Baja races.

I don't recall ever seeing a Sierra Blue Renegade in 1972. Orange and purple yes. Yellow or green maybe.

To the OP, I suggest you take a sample of the paint color to the paint store and they can match it. The inside of the glove box or tool box door maybe. Or ask them to make a spray can of the formula and test it on your Jeep to see how well it matches.

Tim, I'm just pulling your chain! I was seeing the 999 codes in your post that were typically used on the Renegades. I also haven't seen a light blue intermediate Renegade before, but have seen at least two Ren l/Ren ll earlies in Sierra Blue over the years. The code was probably just carried over to the '72 paint chart. I still have a '65 Tux that was originally Sierra Blue (now red), and I never thought it looked right on a Jeep. Somehow, now I think its a real good color for an early. Even the Renegades look really good in light blue, in a retro way, with the black or white decals. I now like it enough that I may paint up a project I'm putting together as a light blue Renegade clone!
On the other subject, I knew of the Riverside track, but didn't know about the off-road racing at that venue.

My understanding is the original color of my jeep is a renegade special color, It has the renegade features that are described except for two odd ones, one is the tail gate the other is a offset dana 44 track lock rear end with the production date of 1971, Has any of you on the forum seen this before, question is were they using parts from the 1971 on some of the very early 1972,

September is the beginning of the "next" model year for vehicles, so your intemediate CJ5 is a very early 1972 model. Add to that the changes from 81" wheel base to 84" to accomodate the AMC line of engines, and you have a very early (what we call) intermediate CJ, so there may be some odd parts we're not used to seeing together.
What transfer case do you have, D18 with the right offset output,or the D20 centered with the output in-line with the engine centerline?
The TracLoc limited slip replaced the previous PowrLok around 1970/71.
Does anyone on these forums have an original dealer brochure for 1972, to see some of the features/options?

I will have to check to see if as I am no expert, I have until now assumed a d20, my engine is a August 22 1971 build date with tranny bell housing July 71 casting date code, I have sent pics to barnes jeep parts and he stated that the transition period they did use up 71 parts at time that he has seen. Mine also has 14 leaf springs in front and 9 leafs in front which barney's said he believes is original but only seen on military vehicles, but was available.

A Jeep with a VIN starting in J2 is a 1972 model, regardless of the build date. As Tarry pointed out, the factory started retooling and building the new model year in the summer of the previous year, revealing the new models in September, so a September 1971 build date is well within the 1972 model year.

TrakLock is all that the factory supplied in 1972. If you have any further doubt, your only choice is to take the cover off and look.

A conventional or "open" differentiial case is on the left, and a TrakLock case on the right.

If this is a new-to-you Jeep, I'd suggest you take the covers off the front and rear axles, take a look, seal up and fill with new oil. Axles use 85W90 API-GL5 gear oil. The rear axle will also need a friction modifier for LSDs that you can buy at the parts store or online.
