Want to ask for advice, regarding a twin point Mallory distributor. Or, should I just keep my OEM single point unit in place, actually it has served me well. My 258 is bored and stroked.... have a Holly on 1" riser w/4 orifice to increase Torque, Hedman headers, Offenhauser dual exhaust outlets.... presently awaiting 200 ampere Mean Green Alternator.

Off the Dual Point topic for a few minutes...... want to share something..
Presently, have designed a small capacitor coupled clip unit with BNC connector to monitor the point driven ignition in any Jeep with Points. I use this clip on my coil wire and actually monitor all of the cylinders together. Or I can use two of the clips and simply trigger my O-scope with the coil and monitor individual cylinders. My innovative capacitor coupled clip design can/hasl even allowed in-depth analysis of any point ignition system... even to give insight of a pending distributor shaft bearing failure upcoming! It also is great to allow a close look at fuel mix adjustment (twin carbs or older solex, Carter, etc... by viewing ignition firing sequence...timing between firing on O-scope and adjusting, viewing for best adjustment. f

It may sound expensive... IT IS NOT!! It is easily made with Radio Shack components and anyone can also find an O-Scope on eBay for 35 to 100 dollars. I purchased two earlier this year... one was twenty five (Tektronic dual trace) and the other was a little more at $244.00 (B&K Scope dual trace).

Seriously... if anyone is interested, I would be glad to post a thread with design, Radio Shack & Publix parts list...and also diagnostic suggestions for items I mentioned above and other ways to help diagnostics for better torque and operation.....:)

I know it sounds funny.... but I found all the parts at those locations and spent less that $30, with parts left over for other projects.

Now.... can I get some advice on using the Dual Point or not using and posting same on eBay for sale? If the latter is the advice.... it is as new, what amount should I look for $$ ??

This twin point unit was purchased a year or so after I took delivery (new) of my Jeep.

Thanks alot in advance everyone! I am a pretty good fabricator, welder and innovative with design regarding mechanical and diagnostics of electrical and board level electronics. Actually Theoretical and Applied High Energy Physic's is my forte. But this Jeep has been my passion for over 36 years..... have had many others, but this old fella has always stayed tucked away in some safe, out of the way.... WELL... if not in view, less likely to be sold! know what I mean!

I found this distributor in my garage workbench's bottom storage locker. Guess I kinda stuffed it away some years back.... darn...... should I use it or just look into a DUI or upgrade to something else?

All Suggestions are appreciated and very welcome..

Much Thanks to all for the expertise!! What is the opinion!

Ok, I'll give it a try. As I understand it, you're asking if you should keep your single points setup, or switch to a mallory dual point. If that is your question, I'd do neither.
You look to have your jeep packed with the goodies, so why not consider some kind of electronic ignition? I run a DUI myself, nice and simple, very reliable, pricey though. If cost is an issue, or you just like to tinker, you could assemble your own "junkyard HEI". Lots of posts on the issue here, a search should keep you reading for a few hours... Put the mallory on ebay, and get what the market will bear, apply the proceeds to the HEI upgrade.
Probably not much help, my only experience with Applied High Energy Physics usually involves nothing more complex than the use of a hammer... R)

    I agree with Farfle,
I'd do either the junkyard HEI. Great upgrade that works well and parts are easily obtainable. OR go with the DUI if you want to spend the money for a ready to go set up. It's basically a new HEI system. The HEI is clean, simple, and it works.... Can't get better than that IMHO. Nickmil

I did the junkyard HEI upgrade on my 72 and used the gear off of my old points distributor and modified a set of Chevrolet V8 spark plug wires that I had laying around ,the swap only cost me about $85 and it works great.

Outstanding, thanks very much.... will do just that, soon as things slow down. Will also do the eBay thing with the Twin point and put the original in a box as "The back-up" that will never be needed.

Will get some pics together for another thread for the small capacitor coupled probe I mentioned. Somebody on here has probably already done this for sure... but it may still be of interest?

Thanks again.... In another direction... I'm using a hammer alot lately, seems I've neglected and allowed some major corrosion on the body to frame bolts (CJ5) and some are real bad. So, will be cutting them all off and replacing with new canvas grommets? Anyone use a 1" body lift instead of the OEM canvas between body and frame as original?

    Thanks, Gunner
