My jeep is supposed to have an overcenter spring on the clutch pedal arm. The p.o. apparently never installed one when they switched over to a fiberglass body.

I have bought a new spring to install, and my FSM shows an exploded picture of the whole clutch pedal and linkage setup, but is not very clear as to where this spring attaches.

Can anybody help me out? I've looked at a few other CJ's, but their spring goes from the pedal arm to the dash, like a return spring.

Mine should go from the pedal arm toward the firewall. Thanks.

I just took two stock '75 pedal assemblies apart and both had the spring from the extension on the firewall side of the pedal arm to a hole in the stop bracket.

...so, it didn't attach where the clutch rod passes through the clutch pedal arm? Not sure I understand...

On mine there's an obvious hole in the stop bracket (?) where the end of the spring goes. Mine was/is broken, one of many it seems.

    <edit> I have a picture somewhere...

There's a hole in the bracket in the top center of the picture that the broken end of the spring goes through. Note that this is a '75, so it won't be exaclty the same, but may be similar.

Looking at Tim's picture, mine attached at the protrusion sticking out of the arm opposite where the pushrod bolts to the arm. Where it looks like the arm makes a Y, the spring attached to the left side behind the black cable.

Thanks guys! My setup is a little different, so I'll have to get creative.

Another question...if this spring WAS attached at both ends, which way would the direction of pull be...dash to firewall, or the opposite? Does this spring help the pedal return back up to the top position?

For the first inch or two of pedal travel, it provides resistance. Then it goes over-center and starts to assist (pull with the action). I'd guess it helps with pedal feel - the clutch works without it, and I don't think it's enough resistance to matter to the clutch action.

Thanks, Tim. Somebody told me that the spring that attaches from the clutch fork to the bellhousing, which I thought was JUST for pedal return, was to make up for any slop in the mechanical clutch linkage ALONG with pedal return.

The overcenter spring supposedly is to ensure full pedal return.

Anyway, I installed a new one on my jeep today( there was none there since I've owned it). Not a fun job!!
