Spent most of the 'mid-day' yesterday fiddling things on the jeep.

Not a ton to report, but here's a few photos.

Not super happy with my ability to route the wires, so I'll come back to that.

I have a few hoses to go find, like the 'short s' hose between the thermostat housing and the water pump. Need to also include a lot of fuel hose.

    Question:
Anyone have opinion on hard fuel lines vs. just running hose? I have the 'addition' rear 15g tank and I'll be putting 'back' the original style under-seat tank. I will have a simple tank selecting solenoid.

Question: Anyone have a thought on the 'fuel return line' (over flow / return line / what ever it's called, and if just capping it at the fuel pump and at the tank doesn't cause un-intended problems?

    Random photos for the day:

Here's what I'm starting to think of for the front 'cross member' (aka: new bumper), it's like 1/8" thick 2in x 5in tubing. I have some 3 1/2" x 1/2" plate that I'll be running thru the bumper for the bumper's mount point out the back, I thought about also using it to make clevis pull points from, so I'll be fiddling little bits of that design to possibly have a 'double-point-design' for the clevis pull point may be separated an inch or so apart and welded into the bumper, then backed by some stronger plate as well...
I also have a tow bar who's outside edge is 24". I have an idea or two how to make some weld-thru mounts that will use clevis'.

I'm not sure yet if I want to put the square tube receiver mount on the front yet. May be later. Other 'may be later' items include a thru-bumper port for the winch-cable and proper mount spots for the roller-fairlead - and while I want the winch lower in the frame, I have to get the saginaw mounted first so I can figure out how to work around that.

I bought those bright blue wires somewhere on sale, dont recall when or where. Overkill prolly. They were in the parts pile for a few years. The crunchy black ones i just pulled off were cracked and rodent chewed.

    Test start monday maybe.

I feel like i move slow as syrup in winter on some of this. Garage is a mess of other junk i move around like blowing grains of a sand dune. Combine with other ‘life gets in the way’ stuff and it is like watching cement dry sometimes.

Made it to a new FLAPs yesterday. Nice shiny store. Guy was helpful. Got out the door for $20 for some fuel hose, the bypass hose on the water pump and a fuel filter.

No luck locally on a sending unit for the gas tank. MTS i think will be my next stop.

Rooted through a parts pile in the shed for stuff i stockpiled. Still looking for a few things i thought i had squirreled away.

Trying to figure out how to make a mount for the saginaw part of the project in between other things. That rusty mess is a core.

Have some round stock that i might make use of on the mount to 1/2” plate as mount points based on my “washer thickness fab”. Just enough washers stacked to let the plate sit flat. Now i need to move things around and figure out where it should go. Reviewing the other things folks have done here.

Run hard lines and rubber in key locations. Rubber deteriorates, and suspetible to rubbing.

Braided lines, I have no opinion.

Question: Anyone have a thought on the 'fuel return line' (over flow / return line / what ever it's called, and if just capping it at the fuelpump and at the tank doesn't cause un-intended problems?

I seem to recall it helps by removing aerated gas, which would help with vapor lock. Double check me on this.

Great to see your back to the Jeep!

    SAGINAW Continues:

I'm trying to figure out the best way to come up with a mount for this '76' series style gear.

I need to either make a mount similar to the Advance Adapters $80 weld on, or I have some close approximates for nubs that I need to fab myself

These fractions are about the 'nub stickout' I need to mount this thing.

Time to visit the scrap bins at metal shops.

1” DOM tubing and 3/8 plate is what I used to make mine.

DOM goes through the frame and plate. Welded on both sides. Bolted up on outside of frame with same bolts or it was grade 8.

Before you make a mount better figure out where your going to put it............Best location I think is running the steering input shaft through the crossmember........but it can go either side....go to that steering link and study all the options.........then build a bracket...........the spacers can be just 3/4" round bar stock , cut off to the right length , drilled and welded to your plate.

I need to get out more often... and see about this. Couple places I'll check in the morning. There's no longer a steel vendor in Chico. You have to use All Metals out of Oroville or one of the vendors from Redding (I hear good things about one of them). Not sure I'm happy with what I got from All Metals the other day when I was there. A lot of significant dents in the 10ft 2x5 piece I bought, not sure I got it at scrap price for such a scrap-like piece (and surface rust - frankly, I'd expect more for what I got). But it's workable, so I am not really grousing too much.

Thomas may have some stuff in a bin (8th Ave near Guy Rents between HWY 32 and the train tracks). I hear they're pretty proud of their scraps though.
There's a shop on 8th at Salem that might have something, and I'm thinking about asking them if they do laser cutting for small projects also.
    Few others around as well.

Hard fuel lines are great if you have the time & patience to bend , fit , flare and protect them.........personally I would go with some #6 or #8 braided fuel line.......you can cut it to length and put the ends on yourself..

Remember I told you I use to deliver steel to all those little Ma & Pa steel houses in that area years ago.........last time through Chico at Thanksgiving on my way to Lake Almanor I got lost in town just trying to find those old places that were off of old business 99.............my how things have changed there..............Home Depot or Orchard supply has round bar stock.........use a piece of at least 3/8" plate for the mount.

This is what I was looking at today. I have a piece of 4" tubing for just such an homage similar to yours, but your short-shaft to the pillow block mod, yeah, that is a bit out of my wheel house, so I'm looking at options there, but man, that is really clean. I have some 1" solid round pieces that I think I can make work for the spacers - all the way thru the other side of the frame - that was the plan anyway. I will revisit that some more.

I need to make sure that steering link is not going to cause bump steer, but I think I see that also (your note on 3/4" pivot forward +/-) - once I get it clamped close, then I can compress it and see.

Down on Park Avenue, south end of town...

Indeed! Bi-Rite Steel was one of my favorites. They were good people. Told me once, "your welds are ok, nothing a grinder can't fix"... We made a pedal-car with their patience / help once, with joystick steering (imagine 4 guys all with pedals under them, from 200lb to 300lb each sitting on there - three were legit olympic lifters, I was the smallest, and yeah, I lifted, but my 100kg clean didn't even get them warmed up), and pedaling a trussed framed, bicycle wheeled, joystick steered 'contraption' - with buck-board seats that my buddy's dad covered with seat materials... some push-button lights from Walmart's auto-bling section, and a little lawn mower 12v battery... we rolled that thing around on the bar crawls... tons of fun. They actually broke an axle one night (1" solid stock, spun it torsionally). At least our milled slots held.

Bi-Rite is gone. It's now a 'T-shirt / printing' operation (nearly next door to 'Orient and Flume' glass blowers). They killed it on the real estate deal for their retirement, imo.

Pollack Steel was nearly across the street. They just closed last year - The Bidcal folks did their closing/retirement auction. Building sits empty.

Few orchard equip manufacturers around - and some small welding shops. Going to stop by and introduce myself at a few.

I don't mind the trip to Oroville to the steel place over there, but I think I have to ensure the quality, unless I'm picking out of the scrap pile.

    anyway...

but I built a tubing straightener... and have the tubing bender ... and the flaring tools.

It's testing my patience, but I have the materials... (steve austin / six million dollar man music playing...)

I haven't yet launched parts down the street, across the garage or really have even given into swearing.

    yet.

When I was mocking up my Jeep to use Herms steering kit I made my own steering box mount from plywood and dowel. I had removed the factory frame boxing and infilled the frame rail with 2x lumber. I made the mount longer - front and rear - than the steering box. I bolted the box to my mount and then was able to screw the mount to the wood filled frame rail. Obviously its only temporary but it made it easy to move the box forwards backwards up and down and see what the best mounting position would be. And I moved it along with the drivetrain many many times. Keep up the good work - it looks great. Also - years ago here I believe member Mcruff had some nice drawings with measurements for a saginaw box mount.
