got the charge pipe on, drain line is hooked up.
turned the fuel reg up, still need to add the boost pump and I need to get a vac gauge. went around the block, :driving: no seats, snow plow on the front, super fun lots of potential maybe 1lb boost so far :hurrican:
still leaking oil on the feed line, need to move the feed at the block, i tapped off the oil filter, looking for a better place to tee the oil feed, charge pipe needs more work, exhaust manifold is hanging on 2 bolts, drain line touches the frame and steering drag link, progress pics asap.

so gotta justify why I haven't been on here so often, classes, work, roommates project, [IMG]
side project, seats without exposed springs,
    [IMG]
just swapped out the body under the hardtop and behind the seats, so i could have a real tailgate. it was all road signs and rust before.
windshield cracked trying to fold it down, so another setback mehh
    [IMG]
Charge pipe, no intercooler till it summer, blame the windshield. got a vac/ pressure gauge pulls 18in at idle hits 2psi then starves for fuel, also leaking fuel between the pump and carb noticed sunday so i'll replace the line and add the electric fuel pump and possibly a fuel pressure gauge. turns out my exhaust guides are not so good.
How to get oil and starve the front main. oil pressure went from 45psi at idle to 35psi and there is a scruffing sound from the front without it spooling
    [IMG]
yep we got a little red wagon in the drive, a nasty camero in the front yard, and a snowplow in the backyard, none moved more than a block this week.

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see it done. Be interested in a dyno run when your finished.

got it to a road worthy state, still only 3lbs but good enough for a blow through carb. leaking a lot of exhaust at the #4 cyl because it has a broken stud that i can't get to. The parking lot is too small to really give it a run. the oil line to the filter is a tad inconveniently short, placing the filter in the way. status pics:

argh failed inspection #2 (Header leak) but drove around anyway because the daily kept sliding in the snow, went into the curb a few times.
I've always been able to hit 55mph.
Tried the highway topped out at 56mph  needs a lot of tuning started cutting out a wot then the oil got low so i eased back to the house. thinking i need a fuel pressure gauge, better fuel pressure regulator, and higher pressure pump. boost showed ~2lb at best if i punched it, hopefully fixing the header leak will up the boost.
The school's dyno is being replaced, hopefully the new one will be finished this spring,

passed inspection. slowly worked on testing and tuning, turns out i have far more wear than I thought and my engine has been rebuilt before.
notes for those that want to consider something like this... get valve seals. in driving 10miles I lost all my oil in blowby :? 5qts in 10mi that's like... $2 a mile with gas, or $8 a mile if i didn't have a friend tow me back, then loosing 2hours work... all in all this month i have made $90 plowing and lost... more than that in the 20mi it has moved itself under its own power... and I want to tow a trailer 1000mi to NY.... ha :dead horse:

now i'm back to post 1 :smash:

spend average f-head rebuild plus turn guides for valve seals ~$1200 ($700parts, $500machining ) figure 17mpg cruise (55mph), 14mpg anytime else on premium unleaded.
goal of 134hp on boost at best (209hp w/75 shot nos for unclebill:))
the only part I have concerns about are the connecting rods (slotted, with a bolt; really?)

    or
    Chevy 4.3, t-90
engine $400+, found one from a running 5speed 1/2ton truck (tranny went toast)
    trans adapter $300
    radiator, $200 exhaust, $100 (I got a welder)
    150-200 hp depending on year
guessing Overdrive with 5.38 16mpg, on regular unleaded
would need to figure how to rework the plows lift.
and find a way to power the vac wipers

now how much time will each take, what have i overlooked?
how awesome is the 134 project, quite neat.
how practical is the 134 project, not really.

Go with the 4.3, and get electric wipers.

    Nice valiant effort though.

    I know,
but I've been thinking, a clean 4.3 swap now; drive it daily, tow the trailer, find them mountains follow the streams.
then when I have time and the money I can return to stock, or stock block with the whistle to get the Ice Cream and Brews. and by then I can have an 8L and gooseneck to tour the country, (with the jeep in the trailer not towing it... or...)

    monthly status update:
    saving for v6 funds.
The weather has been good so I've been cruising with the waste gate open, no more oil issues aside from a droop in oil pressure when it does spool. so the extreme blowby issues are due to the lack of valve seals.... I keep telling my self valve guides are cheap, and turning them for seals sounds simple, but installing them will lead to a new valvetrain, rings, then a full rebuild.....mehh

going to make a few calls on 4.3s in the morning, looking for one out of a full size truck. thinking 1985 to 1995, lower miles of course but from a manual shift truck so i don't have to mess with too much of the engine.

just noticed something very interesting, Oldsmobile used the diesel 4.3 on front wheel drive cars... traverse mounted... and the water pump on those engines picks up from the opposite side of the pump compared to the wheel drive 4.3 and SBC. so a front wheel drive waterpump ($50) would replace the need for a new radiator ($500)...
to my knowledge the capacity of the 4cyl radiator is adequate for a 4.3 but the lower hose is normally way too far from where it is needed, correct?

If your F-head was in better shape do you think the turbo would have been a successul effort? I keep going back and forth on keeping my f-4, swapping a ford 2.3 turbo, a 4.3, or a 225. I think a turbo project like you did would be really cool, especially if it gives that little bit of extra power that the f-head needs to keep up with traffic!

The f-134 would be successful to an extent if it were in better condition,
mine would pull 55 all day towing a 500lb trailer, flat and level, no overdrive.
but in overdrive it bogs down, so I tested the potential here.
I beleave the turbo would be a ride with the windshield down in overdrive. but i want to tow a trailer and keep up with traffic, and the cost of the 134 for what I want to do exceeds a 4.3. However if your just on the trails or not towing:

If I were to do the F-134 right:
I think a rebuild would be in order because you will need to make some internal changes.
you need valve seals on the intake and exhaust, otherwise you pump past the valve guides and won't get boost down low. and you need stiffer springs or the valves will float under boost at rev, the 2" intake have 3" of area and at 7psi it is 21extra lbs on the spring, then figure the back pressure on the exhaust and it will also be around 3x boost.
The turbo wants plenty of clean oil so a full flow oil filter conversion would be wise. The gear style high flow pump will be simplest to convert and have plenty of flow.
I never tested the stock carter yf because it has several unfavorable aspects when it comes to pressure including seals, pumps, linkages and floats.
It is mentioned that a dodge 2.2 tbi would be an option... not quite so. The 2.2 turbo dodge engine uses MPI. (I have a 2.2 Sundance it would involve swapping the entire fuel system, exhaust, and intake if i were to put a stock 2.2 turbo on it.
I ran a holley 1940 from a ford I6 with little issues, the only thing you need is a spacer under it, a higher pressure pump, and a fuel pressure regulator.
The ignition will need pressure retard, and you can work in vac advance at the same time. I may have had some preignition which would explain some things.
My tinkerings got me a hei f-134 distributor that I was going to vac advance/ pressure retard, but if I ran Megasquart I could run a 7-pin Hei

And a new chapter in this story begins:
    [IMG][IMG]
got some adapter parts, called on some engines, looked at some engines, nothing followed me home.

Its soo top secret I haven't even seen it myself in daylight ;) I need to get it out of the bed of a friends truck in the morning. (I had to work)
now i need to know if i have an internally or externally balanced engine so I can get a flywheel and pulleys, then bell housing and starter,
I have a bad feeling the driverside manifold is going to interfere with my ross box... :(

noticed a lot of wobble in the trans input, so next is to check the trans for wear, shifted smooth never popped out of gear once, but it might have happened taking the hurricane out. mehh

    In the other corner:
tried checking the time of the semi odd firing chevy and found that:
    a. it cranks over
    b. it has compression
    c. it has spark
    d. there was carb cleaner in the carb from cleaning it 3hrs earlier
    e. it fired right up
    f. i didn't see the time
    g. i had to pull the power at the distributor to turn it off
    h. i had to change pants

Roommate is pushing for electric fan and water pump... he doesn't understand its a retro thing... :)
