I love surprises! Went to check the bearings in the axle I just swapped in. I'm down to the last wheel everything else is done on the axle and when I pulled the backing plate off the bearing race fell out! Someone spun a bearing! :dead horse:

Looks like it was working OK. Am I looking for a new housing or can I run it this way? Race just sets in there but not tight. the Bearing was new from PO has run about 5000 miles and seams to be fine but I don't like the way the housing looks.

Doesn't Locktite make an adhesive specially designed for this sort of problem? Seem to recall it having been discussed before...

Yup, it's called "bearing retainer", "bearing mount", or something similar. Clean the housing up clean, clean, clean. Spray brake cleaner is your friend here. Put the bearing retainer/ bearing mount in around the race and install it IF the bearing race just slides in. If you slide the race in and it's sloppy, then the housing needs replaced or repaired.....

Cool! Never heard of that. I'll give it a try for sure! I don't really want to chase another housing now since this one is in. I'll give it a try! Thanks guys!

Ok I went out and checked the shop, someone gave me a large box of locTite samples years ago. This is what I found:

Green RC/609 LocTite (Retaining compound general purpose cylindrical part bonding) also says for temperatures up to 300 degrees where clearance does not exceed .005"

Is this the stuff? This is a few years old but in sealed tubes, does loctite go bad over time?

    Sounds right to me.
I've used Loctite 641 (pn 28802) Retaining compound on "GRAVELY" bearing cups with success.
But those are relatively light load / low rpm.
The worst you can do is spin it again.
Given the oportunity..... I would change out that housing.
Model 41 housings should be cheap. PM me if you need.

Doc Vern mentions the bearing retainer stuff in his website somewhere I think. If not there he talked about it on Willystech. He had to destroy the test piece before the material failed.

I have a few dana 44's but kinda wanted to keep this one stock with a 41. Ill probably pick up another housing at some point as a spair. Thanks all for the help!

    '48 now has:
    new springs
    shocks
    u bolts
    new c shackles pins etc.
    bump stops
Bearings and seals plus new brakes and lines and a loc-rite for rear axle.
