I have been seriously considering the toyota 3b diesel engine and transmission.
4 cylinder so short enough to fit, can be turboed, 3,4 or 5 speed gearboxes if I am lucky enough to find a 5 speed it would be great, and the early transfer case has both outputs on the correct side.

CJ5 is now on the road.
I had it passed 2 weeks ago and already have many comments and looks from people when it is out and about.

Not too many of them in good condition here as they were never as popular as land rovers and land cruisers.

Have you considered a Kubota v2203 di diesel? They fit into an older willys pretty easy, can make pretty good power with the addition of a turbo ( mine is running a Ko3 from a VW Passat) and a Canadian firm , Overland Diesel, make an adapter kit to put one in a flatfender with t-90 trans. Theyre pretty plentiful and are usually found in Carrier reefers on semi trailers.

Get the Toyota diesel engine and 5 speed box if there plentiful. Grab the axles while your at it if ya can. It not the old 5/38 will be good with that 5 speed. You should have plenty of Toyota donor vechels in Australia.

    Update if anyone is interested.

Managed to find an Isuzu 1.8 litre diesel built in 1981 that has never been run. It was a factory demo engine used as a training tool, so never got fitted to a vehicle or started.
So the plan now is to find a 5 speed transmission out of an early isuzu built 4wd from early to mid 80's that would bolt straight on,(Holden Rodeos and Jackaroos down here in Australia) or get creative with other transmission ideas.
    It will also get turbo'd.
Sourced a complete toyota hilux power steering assembly that will go into the 3B as well with some bracket making.

I also have an early 80's mitsubishi 4wd available to donate front and rear axles, tilt steering and and anything else useful to the 3B if I need to move away from the dana axles due to transfer case outputs not working out, so things are coming together.

Have found that the early Holden / isuzu 4wd transmissions are problematic.
The rear out put is central so would have to change axles, and the length won't work well in a 3B anyway.

So I have decided on a 5 speed transmission out of a 1989 Daihatsu SWB (Called a Rocky here in Aust.) which is about as compact as I can obtain here and the outputs are perfect.
Will need a bell housing front modification to bolt to the engine but have already sourced a clutch plate that suits both the Isuzu flywheels clutch housing and matches the spline size in the Daihatsu.

The other diesel thread is motivating me to get some parts together.:)

Plan is after triple checking dimensions to cut approximately the front 100mm / 4 inches from the bell housing, that partially removes some of the taper, which will then make the Rocky bell closely match the size of an isuzu bell.
I will then make a flange from 16 thick aluminium plate that matches the engine bolt pattern.
That will have a centre section temporarily left in place so that a spigot bar can be used to align front and back sets of holes and stiffen the flange while welding.
Then roll a piece of 6mm plate to simulate the shape of the Daihatsu bell housing. It will have a gap where the starter fits so that can be formed with a piece of plate as well.
    Then weld it all together.

The engine has a metal plate between the block and the bell housing to use as a template so I should be able to match drill holes after facing off the 16mm plate to make it parallel to the rear face after welding.
    Can post pics later.

Ok, this is going to turn into a build thread so I may have to change the thread title.

The first stage is going to be the engine / gearbox assembly coming together.

Slight alteration to the plan noted above as I was lucky enough to find an old isuzu 5 speed gearbox that suits the 4FB1 Isuzu engine. It will become a donor for the front piece of the Daihatsu bell housing.

90 mm cut off the front of the isuzu and trim 110mm off the daihatsu give the correct length for the shaft.

A Toyota Corona 1974 model clutch plate matches the Daihatsu shaft and the OD of the Isuzu clutch housing.

First step is cut off the front of the Isuzu gearbox
The gearbox is not usable for 4WD as the casing is a solid item and would be too long for the 3B if I tried to add a transfer case behind it.

Cut off enough with a small extra to allow trimming back to accurate measurement later.

Same cut with the Daihatsu bell housing

I am lucky enough to have some equipment that makes life easy.
A small milling machine to level the cut faces to the exact length I need.
    The rear section first.

Then the front piece is clamped on the table to be faced off. The isuzu bellhousing has a rib cast in that provides a perfect place to work to.
It will give a little extra width to assist when joining the front and the rear pieces together.

Heres how it looks when the 2 bits sit on each other.

Next step is to make a jig to align the halves exactly so the shaft is centred.
    [IMG] [IMG]

Side note, I put the halves in the dishwasher after milling to clean the grease and oil off ready to weld.

The alignments are not perfect but will be a good enough fit to weld most of it so it looks good.
Where there is going to be gaps I will install a filler piece which along with some ribs will add to the strength.

The milling has left 2 perfect flat surfaces to help keep the front and rear faces parallel but I do plan to skim a little shave off the front of the bell housing after it is welded to get it perfect.

Let me know what you want to do. I can split it off into a build thread at any point...or...I can rename it and just move the whole thread.

Maybe move the whole thread if you can please Focker.

If it is renamed it can just be called "CJ3B Beastie" because that is it's nickname and I will make an edit in the first post so people know the real info starts on page 2.

Progress report, made the spigot that will align the rear piece to the front piece in the little lathe using a big bolt.

The spigot sits in the rear oil seal recess and is a snug fit in the guide that supports the clutch bearing so theoretically it should be centred OK.

Also made a sleeve to get the gearbox shaft to suit the Isuzu spigot bearing. A bearing with correct OD and ID is a special order item so I think a sleeve will be just as good.

Next I used the intermediate plate that goes between the block and the bellhousing as a guide by bolting a piece of steel across the centre then finding the centre.
I had already confirmed that the PCD of the holes is consistent, with only the lower 2 smaller holes being on a different centre measurement.
Drilled the centre plate to slip onto the spigot and check and triple check it all looks right.

Clamp it and tacked in 3 places to hold the 2 halves together.
Then test fitted to make sure it all lines up so far.
Also tried the clutch system installed and all that works OK so far.

Welded inside using a MIG, argon gas and 5653 wire, then ground out the outside and ran a bead into the prepared groove.

While welding had a small number of gas bubbles come up in various locations either from casting impurities or oil impregnation n so I switched to TIG for the cap runs to wash those bubbles out.

Added the gussets and some infills where the 2 halves didn't align.

I think it will tidy up nicely and plan to give it a paint job once all the details are finalized.
