Claudia Jean A 1967 CJ6 V6 Dauntless

Well, it has been 3 months. The frame and sheetmetal have been sandblasted and all the patch panels are welded in place. Here is my brother putting the last one in, he came for a little vacation and we ended up working on the Jeeep.



Painted the bottom. Really like this version of Indian Ceramic.



Next the body work, UHG!!. I hate sanding.

 

It turned too cold here in New England to paint. So no more body work until spring .

So it is time to do mechanical. When I first drove Claudia Jean she would only shift into reverse and first. So I took the top off the transmission and found 1 inch of water, rust and dirt in the bottom and a dry rusty top end. I was able to save the case and drain plugs. I purchased a kit from Kaiser Willys. An affordable solution. I started last Thrusday and it was quite simple. I am amazed how much this transmission is like a Ford Model A Transmission. Anyway the FSM and technical information on the Novak-Adapters web page were invaluable. Straight forward, just follow the instructions.

Next I cleaned up the bell housing. The holes that mount the transmision adapter to the bell housing were stripped out. Probably not un-common as the bell housing is Aluminum. I had to go to Grainger and pickup a Redi-Coil kit (generic Heli-Coil) and put in new 1/2' - 13 threads. I used some chromate primer between the Stainless Steel Redi-Coils, just like the DoD. Good enough for Government work good enough for Jeep work.



The shifter tower is next, then I hope for a nice day and I can get these painted and attached to the Transfer case and frame.

Not much. The adapter came in a flat rate $11 box. Think the PTO was around $20. Both aluminum and not as big as I first thought. Working on shipping a winch, that will be a different story.

$700 from western Kansas to Boston.

 

Dropped the Body on the Frame today and made a little hole for the PTO shifter, The PTO is set back about 7 inches because of the Overdrive and PTO adapter. Not happy that I cut outside of the lines with my cut off wheel, but "Oh Well" this is under the 60/40 seat and I will have to put a boot on the shifter any way. Next will have to bend the PTO shifter to fit under the seat. Something to do tomorrow.

 

Well after about a year on another project, I am back to work on Claudia Jean. Cleaned up the placebo heater and installed behind the dash last week.



Used a reproduction defrost and hose from Walcks. The duct inlet is 2.5" inside and the hose fits inside the duct. Secured it with a speed clip.

Here is pic of the heater sheet metal installed.



The output to the defroster is 2" diameter. I used a plastic vacuum extension tube to "bush up" the 2" outlet to the 2.5"hose. Cut the ends off, put them together and it worked great. The spare hole was capped with a 1.5" rubber plumbing cap.

Controls and vacuum system are next.

 

After 28 Months she runs again.

Need to set the timing and carb, I dug out my timing lights and neither one worked, I haven't used one in 20 years, since I sold my 64 Chev Pickup. Oh well time to get a new one.

I have oil leaking, at a pretty good clip, out the bottom two 1/4 inch bolt holes of the PTO drive. Good news is that the passages from the transmission, transfer case, and overdrive to the PTO are open. The bad news it is draining all the components. Anybody have a fix? I have tried some Permatex #2 with a washer on the bolt but that just slowed it down some.

Did you try a little teflon tape? when other things fail, a 25 cent roll of that stuff can sometimes save the day.

 

Really nice project. I am hoping to start a similar project towards the end of this year. A CJ6 pick-up - possibly an extended cab. Nice work.
