How is this, speedometer gear (#58), supposed to be installed on the transfer case rear output shaft (#55)?

According to the FSM the smooth end (Pic with area circled in red) appears to be installed facing forward. If it is installed with this end facing aft will it cause the speedometer gear (#67) that drives the speedometer cable to disengage?

If so, then I might have finally figured out why my speedometer doesn't work. Numbers in () are from the FSM. Pic from FSM:

The smoothe part faces forward, or toward the output shaft bearing.

Thanks nickmil, will be looking at removing the backside of the transfer case to remove and install this in the correct way. I'm hopeful that this will remedy my speedometer issue.

Ok. Took the backside of the transfer case apart and discovered this:

Removed and installed in the correct orientation. Now looks like this:

After reassembling the rear transfer case and the jeep the speedometer now does this:

Yes, yes it is. I am so happy that I was finally able to figure out why the speedometer wasn't working right. The guys on this site helped steer me in the right direction. Now I get to enjoy going 55 mph on the speedometer when in reality I'm only doing 50 mph. Did a comparison today between the Speedometer and GPS speed. :D

Bringing this thread back. I recently pulled my gears and I'm the process of replacing them with the correct ones. However the correct drive gear for me is a 6 tooth gear with no apparent difference from looking at it in orientation. Does it make a difference for the orientation of the drive gear 910086 (SW# 447331)?

One side of the gear should have a raised shoulder, not much but still a shoulder. That side goes toward the front.

One end of gear is stamped with Stewart Warner numbers.
That end faces to the rear jeep.
