anybody ever think about using one of these surplus hummer winches that are hydraulic and running it off a power steering pump?

Hey, thats a great idea. I wonder if a P/S pump has enough flow to run it? .. Like Ryans snow plow..

I've seen people run hydraulic winches on trailers run off a pickups ps pump. Heck, the ps pump I just put on Ted would work. It moves some fluid.

I talked to mile marker years ago, they said that the smaller hydro winches can easily run off of a standard PS pump. For something like this you'd need a larger pump or a dedicated pump to get any kind of line speed out of it. Remember that a humvee already has a high capacity pump because its also hydroboost.

Having been recovered by a hydro winch on an astro van once, I can say that they are SLOW>

How big are these things? Will they even fit on the front of a jeep?

I am familiar with the hydro boost systems on GM, my dads 6.5 diesel suburban has the same setup as a hummer/ambulance. That sucks about being slow, was just an idea but for it to make any sense I would have to get one of these for 3-400

Ain't no free lunch. Speed or power, choose one.

I imagine the available horsepower from a PS pump isn't much compared to an engine driven PTO.

I crunched the numbers one time- at rated line pull & speed & not allowing for frictional losses a Ramsey 8000 lb. winch sucks back about 3 1/2 HP.

I seen a home built winch one time on the front of a Willys Wagon that was powered by a REO 3.5HP horizontal shaft lawn mower or rototiller engine. We used it to pull Pole bean poles out of the ground as we took down a field. HAD gobs of power and would spin up pretty fast if the guy wanted it to. He had a kind of remote made with a motorcycle throttle. took two hands to operate but worked well.

I've seriously considered doing this on my truck.

one more failure point in my opinion.... for recovery, a 12v winch will work even if your engine won’t....
