For my '73 cj5 restoration project, we replaced the fuel tank with a standard intermediate replacement. It has the 2 inch (approx) neck to attach the filler fuel hose to. (It may be more accurately about 2 1/4" or so.)

We found a used filler neck from a '76+ model CJ and it looks like it takes a 1" fuel hose.

So... does anyone have a clever idea for how to connect the 1" fuel filler neck to the 2.2" fuel tank neck?

    thanks.

Honestly, take both to a local parts shop and see what they have. There may be a step down type thing that is available. 1" into a 2 1/4" should be much easier than the other way around.

Copper pipe fittings (reducers), or a tailpipe muffler reducer.

About 75 when they went to unleaded fuel they changed the filler neck to a smaller fitting so you couldn't put leaded fuel in an unleaded tank. I thought they just added a size restriction in the filler neck.doesn't seem as if a 1" filler would allow you to fill the tank at the pump.

I am not sure but I think 4WD HardWare has the filler hose and inlet fitting for the older Jeeps.. I'd change it out to the larger size.

4wd has the filler hose. The metal filler neck is a whole nother animal. oly4x4 sent me one from a junked Jeep. They are damn near impossible to find. I searched EVERYWHERE, including salvage yards.

My bad.. After looking profusly in the 4WD catalog, I found the hose, but no filler cap in 2".. They have the 1 " but no 2".. I suspect the gov'mnt has regulated us again.. They do have a replacement fuel tank that will take a 1" hose though.. As well as the hoses in both sizes..

If you can get a wire hanger bent up to the shape needed to go from the fillter neck to the tank any muffler shop should be able to build a metal tube with the sizes you need. Then use 2 short pieces of hose at the tank and neck.

This is probably a crazy idea, but have you thought about just replacing the 2.2" inlet neck with one from a later CJ? It's not like you are going to find too many gas stations that carry regular leaded anyways. This way may be a bit more expensive, but you won't have any extra parts that might fail on the trail/road....or sometimes upsidedown! R)

That's a good idea. The trouble has been to find the correct size of reducer to connect from the filler neck to the tank. A custom build would be sweet. I'll have to check in with an exhaust shop and see if they can do that.

Yea, thought of this too. Hind sight can be so clear. We started the re-build project quite a while ago. Bought a brand new gas tank quite a while ago. I'm sure it has been too long for us to return it and exchange for the later model/style of gas tank. The one we have has not even had fuel in it yet but looking at the project now, the newer style would be just the ticket.
