So, I was rebuilding my Dana 20 transfer case. I used two different sites for information as I tore it down and put it back together. One (if not both) suggested eye protection when replacing the shift rods and poppet balls. The detent springs can create a lot of pressure.

Please know that I am always careful with my eyes. At 44 years old, I'm still pretty close to 20/20. My ears ... well that's a different story. Rock concerts and power tools have pretty well screwed up my right ear. But I really like my eyes. Anyway, I'm the guy who has several sets of eye protection on hand. One sits in the base of my creeper stool. One sits right next to my bench grinder -- always. Another pair floats around the shop as I work on this or that. A pair of safety glasses (or my face shield) is never far from where I happen to be at the time.

So, as I pushed down the poppet ball -- without eye protection -- and tapped the shift rod ... BING! The ball flew out and hit me on the cheek. It left a little mark to remind me how stupid I am.

Bottom line, a long day and a split second of inattention is exactly how most serious injuries happen. An inch to the left and I'd really have been hurt.

I don't think I'm telling anyone anything they don't already know. Just the same old thing to keep in mind.

I used to be so bad about not wearing face gear and moving too fast. At 45 I am getting used to the reverse! Glad you are OK!!
